I've read various threads on here, visited various garden centres and landscape gardeners and yet the only recommended rock I seem to find is Slate.

To quote a thread on here the best types of rock for an Mbuna tank are: Granite, slate, holey rock, limestone, lava rock, lace rock, silica rock, and river rock.

Not once have I come across limestone, lava rock, lace rock or silicia rock. Is there an online retailer that actually sells rock for reasonable prices in quantity, because I really can't find one that isn't trying to rip me off.

Does my bloody head in!

Every fish stockist should have rock in store.I dont know where you are from but in England i dont have any problems at all.
Its not cheap mind.

i have been through the same problem i now have ocean rock aka holy rock its avalable in most lfs but its quite expensive i about £3.00 a kg bearing in mind i have used about 35 kg in my tank , check out ebay there was someone selling it for £30.00 for 25kg inc delivery

I am in the process of setting up a cichlid tank (200lt) and i have tried pricing rock in a number of places and to say the least I havent been impressed with the price that the lfs have been telling me. So I rang a friend who owns some land on the far side of the country (Ireland) and asked if he had any just lying around the place. He said that he had any amount of rock and that I was welcome to as much of it as I wanted. I took a trip this weekend from dublin to mayo (approx 250km's). When I got there the place was a gold mine of rock. The river that ran through his land had both granite and sandstone rocks in it (lovely and rounded from errosion in the river) and he also had an outcrop of limestone at the far end of the property. I said "thank you very much" and I started filling up bags of the stuff. The stone is goinig to need a good boiling. So my advice is if you need stone and you know anyone with a bit of land (any bit of land no matter how small or how big), get in touch and ask them. My travel time was about three and a half hours each way, but I made a huge saving on the rock alone plus I also had a huge selection. Anything I wanted in the valley!!!! I'm driving back to Dublin tomarrow I just hope that my car will make it, its very much laidend down.

Just so you can get a scale of the savings I was quoted about 5 euro per kg of stone (average per type of stone) in my LFS, I would say that my overkill collection antics today has left me with about 150kgs (way more than i need) (will ever need!!!) (I could build a small fort after I'm finish my tank) of stone in my car. If you can do the maths thats a hell of a lot of savings, but it will cost me a little extra for petrol on the way home.

cheers

I have lava rock tufa rock rainbow rock and some other bits in my tank all from my lfs and p@h it is a bit costly from £3 a piece to £7 for larger pieces but it is worth it.

Hi There

I 've got a 100 gallon Tank its 2ft wide and 2ft deep and I bought 2 boxes of ocean rock each box is about 50 pounds in weight. My Lfs let me have it a bit cheaper because I'm always in there. One box was about £ 75 and I've got it for £ 50. So the rocks for the tank all in all cost me £ 100. Not a cheap hobby. But only a one time investment.
