what size tank do you think you would need to happy house a neon tetra without a filter and getting high ammonia and nitrites and how much plant foliage would you need? (not that im planning on doing it i was just wandering)

i know that but its not the point i wouldent put 1 fish in on its own id scale the figure up to the size which it needed e.g 6 fish needs 6x the volume of water and plants

Hm you're trying to ask how much room (volume of water that is) 1 single fish in general would need and how much plants would be required to remove the ammonia/nitrites?

Firstly you'd need to specify what kind of fish you're thinking about because different fish have different needs. Plus, I don't think you'd want to go without a filter. That means daily water changes and with a big tank isn't that very tiring?

I wouldn't have fish without a filter but thats the rough guide 1 inch per gallon so im sure that accounts for the same, whether you have a filter or not.

naturally fish don't have a filter and they don't die cos of high ammonia and nitrates cos the plants take them up and they have a lot more water? i was thinking is there a way to have a fully natural tank (with lights and heater) but no filter... and if so how much water would each fish need and how much plant

Well the tank would have to be huge so the water is stable and have a lot of plants , you wanting a natural eco system kinda thing?

yer that sorta thing =] i was thinking it would have to be big but would like a 120l tank be ok for 1 fish? or would you need bigger still? ... i was wandering on a rough size (i know bigger the better in this case )
