Nnnnnnnooooooooooo!

there is no point @tombomb you have obviuosly had a bad day at the office, what I mean is would you not rather be nice and help rather than be abrupt and off putting to a teenager. maybe then you would have a better chance to get through to them.

Any how cycling with fish (whether you like it or not) is still practised so you can either help them with it and try to make sure its as harmless as possible (and then you can hopefully wise them up to the better practises in a pleasant manner) or do the opposite and make them ignore you anyway.

your choice

orange shark, your amonia will eventually drop in time and when your tanks is cycled you will be able to add the fish you so desperatley want, and then it'll all have been worth it. Take time to decide what you want to do cause rushing things causes probs :good: . If you will cycle with fish just make sure you do all the right things to reduce the stress for them.

hope you do well with it.

cheers chish

@tombomb I think you should lighten up, orange shark is only 15 and maybe doesn't have the experience you do at the age of what 29. If you want to be constructive help him out, dont ridicule him otherwise he'll do what he wants anyway. (which it looks like he is doing)

Personally I find the "I'm bored of doing it the right way so I'll do it this way instead attitude" disgusting

I understand what you mean.

To be honest, a freshwater cycle shouldn't have taken this long. A mistake must have been made, or something wrong happened like a sudden temperature change, or the filter stopped working.

thanks for the advice, they will be getting daily water changes (apart from the weekend when im in london) and fed lightly.

thanks, orange shark

As i stated before, i cycled with fish in, and it is very hard work, i would like to point out that i have never tried to use excuses as to why i cycled with fish, i just did, not doing enough research ect. I found this forum extremely helpfull and we know that fishless cycling is the most ethical way of doing it, but when your new and want fish, you run out and dive in head first by getting a few fish. Let it be said that lfs's dont help in this matter as it was never mentioned to me at my lfs about fishless cycling, they just tried to sell my useless bacteria in a bottle which did nothing. There is a lot of accusations thrown around on this forum if people do a fishy cycle but at the end of the day, its better to help someone through it than belittle them with this 'i am right, you are wrong' attitude. If everyone is a little nicer to our fellow aquarists, you can say that you have done everything you can to help someone. People are always going to cycle with fish, its a fact. I had lots of problems with my cycle and lost a couple of fish, and i did water changes religiously, but my tank has now cycled and is settling down before i add a few more fish. If orange shark is only 16, he has lot of learning to do and he will learn it from poeple with apositive attitue, not a negativ one. I will not need to cycle with fish again as when i get another tank i have got a few peices of spare media and i am leaving it in my tank for at least 6 months, then transferring it to the new tank. Nuff said! Deary me, i sound like my dad! What ever you do Orange shark, do it carefully and with the fishes best interests. GRJ

I don't agree with using Cories, Stu as they are sensitive fish and prefer a more mature tank.
Orange Shark, I'm so sad that you have decided to add fish before the tank has cycled but I wish you luck and hope it works out for you.

i never cycle

doing a planned cycle is a really good idea

I gotta put my input in here, i have started 4 tanks (one was only a 2 gallon) and currently have 3 of them running and I have never once done a planned cycle.. I just followed the advice of my local pets unlimited, which was to leave it overnight, and add fish... just like RoseK and i have never once lost a fish... IM NOT SAYING DONT DO A PLANNED CYCLE... just adding my input

Well said GRJ! too much nastiness and sniping in this thread, we all know fishless cycling is the way to go but oh well lifes a ***** and some people wont do it!! so lets just help them (not just them the fishies as well) some of you need to get off your 'holier than though' horse and just get on with it, if you dont wanna help and just criticise when you post then DONT POST

Here! Here! That was the general gist of where i was trying to go with that but without sounding bad! Thanks for the support. GRJ :good:

:dunno:
While i wouldn't recommend cycling fish in due to the risk to life/health and the fact it is quite a commitment time, effort and money wise. Few tips;
Get yourself some SeaChem Prime, it more than pays for itself with its usefulness. Be prepared to water change approx 60% daily, test twice daily and keep a neverending eye on the tank for signs off illness.

Sadly I did a fish cycle. I didnt know about cycling at the time and i have had loads of problems. Ammonia spikes. Fish dying and at the moment I am tackling a very persistant fungus. I do regret not reserching cycling and such. But resently i havnt had any deaths and even though itzs been a stuggle getting here, its been worth it. Its shown me the hard side of fish keeping and i wouldnt judge someone for doing a fish cycle. I'd try to help them to be honest.
