Nitrite Spike After Large Water Change- It's Spiked Again

Prime dechlorinates and neutralises ammonia and nitrites. Cycle removes ammonia and nitrites and contains bacteria also, although I'm not sure if it dechlorinates or not. not sure that tapsafe isn't just a dechlorinator as I haven't used that one.

Where can I get some. I think i'm in desperate need of it :(

Online? I found 500ml bottles cheaper online...but I'm in the US. My platies seemed to do better during the nitrite spike after I switched to Prime.

but then, you could be cycled by the time it reaches you. Have you seen it in your stores before?

No i've never seen it in stores. I bought a 500ml bottle of interpet tapsafe for £8 - bargain considering they sell the 120ml bottles for £4.29 and I go through 1 every 2 weeks or so
I've been recommended tetra aquasafe too so I will have a look for that. Right now i'm going to bed it's almost 1am. I will be up at 8ish with butterflies in my belly testing this water.
I will update you guys tomorrow :) Thanks again.

You can get nutrafin Cycle from pets at home or your local fish shop. I think I've seen seachem prime in my local world of water but it can be bought online from places like warehouse aquatics and surrey pets

Right i've just tested the water.

aarrrggghhh! *cries*
It's not as high as it was-it's about 0.5/1.0ppm so it's not going as high as 5 anymore. My boyfriend is like that's it, get shot of it, what a hassle, it was fine before etc
Unfortunately i'm not the type to take the easy route
So what do you say guys? 50% change?

If you do a 50% you'll need to do another 50% tonight as well because the rise is so fast. I think you should be able to get away with a 90% change and hopefully that will mean it'll be back to 1ppm tomorrow morning when you'll need to do another 90%. Ideally you should be keeping the nitrite below 0.25ppm at all times.

Prime dechlorinator is much more cost effective but the combination of stress coat+ and tap safe does the same thing.

There's no way around the water changes at the moment until the bacteria develop to control that nitrite, so keep on making large water changes at least daily.

I've just done a 90% change, and noticed the sponges in the filter were covered in gunge so washed them out again. The test is now sitting at 0-0.25.
I will have a look for prime.
Thanks.

I just tested the water again to be on the safe side and it's still 0 :hyper:
i'll not celebrate just yet though.

Ok just tested it again-IT'S AT 0 WOOHOO!
I will check it again tomorrow morning. Don't like to get too cocky lol

fingers crossed. looks like the new sand and pad clean is helping the situation.
