Nitrite Dropping - When?

Glad to hear your sounding more positive Fishy, hopefully the end of your mammoth cycle is in sight. I'm sure your fish will be appreciating all your hard work soon

Today is day 84 of my very long fishless cycle and today I have added fish. :fish: :fish: At last.

I got 0.00 nitrite and 0.00 ammonia at the 12 hour test for seven days. :hyper:

I took out all the water in my 80l tank, added 30l and stirred the sand up again, took out that 30l and then refilled the tank with water conditioned with prime.

I have put in :

various aquatic plants and some flourish plant food
6 Harlequin rasboaras
3 bronze corys - I know I should have more but thought would start small and get some more in a fortnight or so.
3 japonica cardinal shrip

and 1 rabbit snail.

They all look a bit small in the 80l tank - lets hope they grow lots. :fun:

I have set the temperature to around 24 degrees as that seems to suit them all.

In two to three weeks or a bit longer I am going to add:

6 rummy nose tetras
another 3 corys - either more bronze or pandas

and possibly 1 or 2 gouramis.

I deserve lots of

A harlequin rasbora at a shop around where I live is only about half the size that they quickly grow to be. A bronze cory seems to grow to about 7 cm fairly quickly and the rummy nose will grow to about 5 or 6 cm under decent conditions. You will seldom ever see fish as large as I have said in a fish shop because it is not economical to raise fish to adult size and sell them in the general hobby. The competition among fish shops for the more common fish is rather intense and that means they must get fish that are cheap to buy and sell on.
If you wanted to get adult sized fish of almost any species, it would be necessary to get them from someone's surplus stock. At a typical club auction, fish are offered for sale that are fully adult in size. As an example, if I have a 30 gallon tank that is starting to become overstocked, my best bet, as a breeder of rare fish, is to remove the largest of the adults and sell them. That leaves me with youthful fish who will grow to replenish my stock. It also gives me some breathing room before the population explosion starts again.
