help, i have nitrite of 1.0, maybe higher, i have just put the new filter in that has been cycling in an exsisting tank for 8 weeks, i hve just brought my new dwarf puffer, and then have realised the nitrite is high, plus they dont like nitrite's one bit!

i have done a 25% wc but its still the same,...... please advise

Why did you do that, sounds silly.

anyway...

Do another water change larger than 25%, proberbly 50+%. Have you got access to a mature filter with enought media to donate?

so is the problem that the filter isnt mature, or that it hasnt had enough time to process the nitrite, all other readings are fine?

A spike that size sounds like a cycle so id go with media isnt mature or something in the water from the tap is causing it.

Do you have any friends in fish keeping that could donate you a mature filter sponge.

i have mature media in my biorb and jewel rekord, i have just moved some across....

how long will the dp survive in these conditions??

How is the puffer is he looking stressed. Most fish don't tolerate bad water quality as it stresses them resulting in a weak immune system.
Water changes and increase aeration.

well the nitrite gets into the blood stream and stops the heamoglobin taking on oxygen so i slowly suffocates, it can also form crystals in the veins apparently but im not a believer in it

he is a bit quiet, but then again i have only just put him in the tank, he seems ok apart from keeping himself to himself, he has done a little bit of swimming, but not much....

it might be a long night :( i will do another wc in a bit, i have some of the cirax over, and i will increase aeration

thanks guys, can you give me a time limit?- will he be dead by the morning if i dont solve it?

Its hard to say if he will survive. Sometimes fish can be tough but bad water quality does take its toll on a fish.
All you can do is keep up with water changes and keep fingers crossed.

Did you do another water change, mate?

Don't be afraid of doing large water changes, up to 100% is fine if necessary. Obviously try to match the pH and temp as best you can. You need to get the nitrite down to a max level of 0.25ppm immediately. 0 would be better.

The stresses on the fish of a big water change are far less than the damage the nitrite will do.

Let us know how you get on?

BTT :good:
