Nitite Spike

I've said it many times before and I'll say it here again.

Only a 100% water change and the removal of the fish from their aquarium will reduce your nitrite level to zero. I discovered this December of last year when treating a sick fish. So long as there is water in the aquarium, it seems there will be nitrite so the simple solution to that is to remove all the water and leave one full bucket aside to put your stock in while you re-fill the tank to its full capacity. You will need another bucket of aquarium water to keep your filter media unless you are quick at reintroducing fresh dechlorinated tap water into the aquarium; filter media that dries up is not useful for detoxifying the aquarium!

When you get the fish back in, cut down on feeding by 50% and don't feed as often. If you find that doing this stops nitrite and ammonia spikes then keep feeding them in this way and gradually increase the amount of food over a period of several weeks.

Always remember to de-chlorinate fresh tap water that you are going to add to the aquarium. I always add a double-dose of Aqua Safe when I top-up etc.

I have cut back on feeding to every other day once day small pinch just enough that they can eat in few mins, Im feeding my bn plec cucmber slice over night as it wont eat the algae waffers.

Ive currently got problem with my plants not getting enough co2 because i have 2.1wpg, i have ordered a nutrafin co2 system. Im thinking my plants are currently adding to this problem, should i reduce the time my lights are on till the c02 is started?

Couple of them of growing really well but others are turning black.

I dont have any means to remove fish or another place to store them. What im doing seems to be working, and the results are coming down.

stats this moring are Ammonia 0, Nitite 0.1 which is was last night, again this morning 0.1 so doing another 50% water change. This spike is slowly getting better as the colonies grow to accomadate the extra fish.

I will be getting two more harlequins after ive had week of double 0.

Now Ammonia is giving me problems! Tested again after this mornings water change this was after dosing with TN+ and got 0.6 i drained as much as i could of water and filled up again but still readings of 0.6.

Fish seem ok no obviouse problems. Is this the TN+ any one had experience.

Check your bucket of dechlorinated tap water CheniseMummy.
If I dechlorinate some tap water I can always measure about 1 ppm of ammonia. It is what is left after the dechlorinator breaks the chemical bond between the chlorine and ammonia that make up chloramine.
