Some plants are happy with hard water like many places in the UK, as are some fish. It's much easier to keep fish & plants that fit your water parameters than to try to make them happy in the "wrong" water for them.

Java ferns (many types) & most vallisneria will probably work for you. I haven't had hard water (if that's what you have) for a long time, so I let others advise you.
