New Tank

I just got a tank at the lfs and didn't notice that there was a small chip in the face of the glass. The chip is on the inside near the bottom. The tank is a 45 G.

The chip doesn't feel too deep maybe 1 mm. Is there going to be a problem with the chip once the tank is filled with water. Worried that the water pressure might be too much.

Can't return the tank, it was final sale. Would putting a bit of silicone on the chip help it to hold the pressure of the water?

What do I do now? :unsure:

not sure how thick the glass is or wether or not this chip is major, but my 150us gallan has a chip on the bottom pain which you could fit your little finger over but' it's not deep, so i carried on, tank must have had around 3yrs now fine

I'd say fill it with abit of Silicone and it will be fine :good:

I say call up your local windscreen repair guy and get him to put some of that magical liquid in it

Yeahh good idea nay, just call them up and when they arrive say "Fancy earning yourself a quick fiver" and they will do it no problem just make sure its the tank that you want fixing and your not paying them for anything else that might pop in to there minds

Lol, I don't think they would be able to claim that one against your insurance! I doubt that any Windscreen repair company type would get out of bed for a fiver! I would call up the LFS and talk to them. It's up to you to decide if it looks like it could cause a problem in the future.

Well I dont know about manchester, but around here they are on call out and to earn £5 in there pocket for a 2 minute job they would be more than happy.

Most skilled type ppl (joiners, pumbers, etc) usually have a call out fee, it tends to be quite expensive. But I guess there is no harm in phoning up and asking?

Take it back. You wouldnt buy a pair of shoes with holes in so why should you be happy with a naff bit'o glass.

Swap it for either identical or one of matching value or greater (if they dont have a replacement in stock).

Wouldn't the chemicals the windshield people use be harmful to the fish? It is on the inside.

Hope you haggled down for it then.

I wouldnt go for a windscreen repair type job tho as what they actually do is create a high vacuum to suck out all the air before introducing (injecting) a glue that then gets sucked into the dip and any side cracks. It can simply spread a crack from a small initial mark to a big juicy crack.

...had a repair, and then they had to replace my screen as the repair did more harm than good.

If the glass is that thick I wouldnt be concerned. Take a magnifying glass and look really closely so see if theer are any cracks that could spread. If not then Id simply leave it.

Did get a really good price. $200 off the regular price. Light, lid and decorations included.

Went to a different store today and this guy actually fixes tanks for people as a side business.

Anyone try this....

He showed me a tank that had a hole right through the glass. He said he gets a piece of glass larger than the hole, silicones it to the glass surface, and then puts silicone around the edges of the glass patch. He said if done right, it is good for about 8 - 10 years.

Anyways, thanks for all the advice. Chip doesn't look that bad. Filling it next week on my day off so I will be here to watch it. Don't want to be at work worrying about a possible flood in my living room.
