Hi I just got a new fish tank, but it has been in a shed for at least 5years, it is in good condition but had mud and cob webs etc inside and out, I don't really know how I go about cleaning it, do i just use hot water? Or can I use a special cleaning fluid? I am not new to keeping fish but have never had a tank that needed such a clean.
Obviously I don't wanna use anything to clean the tank that could kill the fish I will eventually get for it.

A very weak bleach solution wash, then a thourough rinse, then wash down with vinegar, the rinse again until you cannot smell the bleach or vinegar.

thanks for the help :) it's turning out to be quite a tough job but I like the challenege. Left to soak overnight in water to soften the algae. Cannot wait to have it done :)

If you have a shower use that, give it a good scrub(not with anything rough obv)

Blimey, my new tank that I need to clean is 400 litres, no way am I dragging that up to the shower :)

Its around my garage, unfortunately the hosepipe ban has kicked in so I will have to clean it ninja stealth style in the middle of the night. :ninja:

Take the shower downstairs? :p

I am using a 55 gallon that was much like your new one when I got it. I used a Scotchbrite sponge, the kind marked as non-scratching, to clean mine with nothing but plain water as a cleaning solvent.
