New Start

So this arrived for me today.

The 501 filter has been developed for those fish-keepers that, for reasons of space, cannot use larger aquariums.

The performance of the pump, the compact shape and the large number of accessories make it ideal for aquariums up to 60 Litres.

The filter comes complete with intake system, hoses and connecting elbows and with a spray-bar outlet for better surface oxygen exchange at the water surface (or you can use the water diverter which can be oriented as required).

The two filter stages, biological and mechanical, have been carefully calculated and provide a very large surface for the best filter action giving the advantage of a better eco-system.

The filter comes complete with ceramic biological supports and a mechanical fine porosity sponge.

The two chambers can alternatively be used with any preferred media.

The shape and sizes of the filter make it ideal for placing beside or behind the tank.

The pump is based on the extensively tested motor of the Eden’s 106 and provides the ideal performance for the proper function of the filter and for the given size of tank.

The filter is easily primed. Simply open the top cap, fill with water and plug in.

A special internal circuit enables any trapped air to be completely discharged so that the filter will run smoothly and quietly.

Two safety clips avoid accidental opening of the filter head.

Any thoughts, I wanted the Convenience of an external. I liked the design of it after seeing someone mention it on here. I am Hoping it will improve circulation aswell. I have also added a UV sterilizer (fishRFun 9V model) to the tank.

Nice filter. I've considered one of these for my nano, swapping the supplied inlet/output for ADA glassware.

Thanks,

It looks really nice, and does come with those type of Inlet/Outlet. But obviously not as nice as ADA stuff

Gill,

I've had one of these Eden501's for a while now, although not used it recently.
Mine is currently 'maturing' in another tank ready for using in my PFK nano.

I've found them to be good little filters. Quiet and with a decent flow rate for nano use, there are however a couple of minor 'quirks' that are easy to overcome, but not always obvious.

The first thing is that they recommend this filter is placed 'beside or behind' the tank. That shouldn't really be a problem, but it's worth remembering that they are not designed to be sited below the tank.

When first stetting them up, it may take an hour or two to remove all the trapped air (no matter how full you try fill it). During that time it may sound noisy ... but once it's cleared the filter is very quiet.
Gently rocking the filter helps remove the last of the air.

There is one thing you can do to improve this filter. If you look at the intake and outflow pipes and the filter media, you'll notice that the sponge filter (mechanical filtration) is next to the 'outflow' tube and the bacterial filtration is next to the 'inflow'. That means any rubbish from your tank gets trapped in the bacterial filtration section and this soon gets clogged up ! Basically it's back to front to what you might expect.
Seems like a bit of a design flaw to me !

What I did was to put a piece of coarse sponge on top of the ceramic rings to take out all the large bits.
I've also removed the sponge filter and replaced it with a fine filter wool to give the water a final scrub.
I did try swapping the bacterial media into the other compartment and it did seem to work fairly well.

Basically you may need to experiment a little with the placement of your filter media ......

Dont let that put you off though. It's far better than a small internal filter, it just needs tweaking a little to get the best performance out of it.

Ive considered one of the filters. Saw them on ebay. Quite nifty. How much yall get yours for?

I got a cheap copy of that filter made by resun for £25 if i remember correctly, though i don't have anywhere to plg it in so i dont know if its any good :X .

The Eden501 filters are currently available on Ebay (UK) Here.

This pic shows the internal filtration compartments quite well:

As I mentioned, the outflow connects to the tube in the middle of the sponge filter, the water coming from the tanks goes straight to the
ceramic tubes meaning they can get clogged up quite quickly, but easily overcome by moving things around or just placing a bit of coarse sponge
on top of the tubes.

Gill: Looking forwared to seeing updates on your nano and seeing how it develops.

So This morning I woke up to A Disaster.

I did my water change the same way i do it every time on Saturday, and went on with the rest of my Day.

Sunday Morning went downstairs and saw something was wrong even before the I turned the lights on. Could see my Shrimp dead at the front of the tank.

Turned on the Lights and Floating on the Surface was:

My Longfin Lutino Danio,
2 of my Loaches
My Hockeys
My Neon
Some of My Killies
Upon Further inspection, Found all but my Cherry Shrimp dead.
All the Killies
My Blue Rasboras
My other Danio
1 of my Kuhli's
ANd my Banjos acting Weird.

So Over 20 Fish and shrimp dead.

Did a Water Change turned off the filter and cleaned it thouroghly, Got all the dead fish out, and put and airstone for more Air/Water exchange.

I have Noticed that on 1 of my Banjos that it has what looks like a cigarette burn just above its Pectoral Fins and my Nymphae Bulb was al Moldy.

My Lone Cherry is sitting in the floating plants fanning water over itself. and the remaing CAE will have to be removed as it was a Trio to even ot aggression.

Suprisingly though, None of My Gouramis Have been Affected or the Tiny Rasboras.

Any Ideas.

Dont ask for stats, as Never done them.

Have always gone by smell, look, how fish are acting.

Also to add,

All the Dead fish Were Curved like a Banana in rigormortis with Black/Grey Undersides.

Firstly, sorry for you losses Gill.

Now may be a good time to test the water.

I don't normally test water either but when fish die for no apparent reason, it's the logical thing to do.

Fish floating on the surface less in less than 24hrs sounds very odd, I thought most "freshly dead" fish sank. I assume you saw them all healthy the day before?

All very strange.

I would test pH, NH3/4, NO2, NO3 to rule out water quality.

Then look at possible equipment issues i.e. electrical.

Thanks George,

Yep they were all healthy on Saturday after the change, I spent most of the day In the PC room. Mum had not seen anything strange dureing the day.

I think I will test the water , first time for everything.

The Water smells normal this evening and rest of the fish acting Normal.

My Neice did not take the Fighters in the end so they have gone back in the cube, as it looked so empty with just the rasboras and Gouramis.

Did you add anything new to the tank?I lost shrimp after adding a plant.

Ammonia burn? Nitrite? My goldfish used to get these when i started off with a ~4gal many years ago :shout: .
