they are being advertised as curvier bichir which is def wrong there are 3 altogether i was just not sure how to tell the difference between bichir bichir and birchir lapradei could anybody tell me how to do this many thanks. They very between 9 and 15 inch for £20 and are in surrey
Price.
Outside of Japan the going rate for a BichirBichir is about 20 times that price, maybe more! Especially for a mid sized WC.
Japan is the only place in the world (as far as i am aware) that has bred these in captivity. So they are Extremely rare in USA/Europe.
You could do a finlet count, pretty sure it is over 16 for PBB.
But at that price there is no way they will be true BichirBichir.
Ask for certification. Without it i would assume they are Laps.
That said £20 for a 9-15" Lap is a good price. Lapradei are awesome Bichirs.
Curviers Bichir is usually a name for a Polypterus Senagalus.
Here's my thoughts:
The pictures you have been provided could well be BichirBichir. But going by the quality of the pics (looks like they have been taken from a video screen capture) My pretty solid guess, is that those will not be what you recieve for £20.
If he is selling them as BichirBichir - Scam. (if you recieve the pictured Bichir, then it's a Lap and a nice deal)
If he tells you they are Lapradei - Good deal, go for it.
Where are they being advertised?
Hope that helps mate.
Just keep your wits. £20 for Laps is a nice price. If the price suddenly changes, or fish not the ones in pictures, steer clear.
On a side note, I am in Japan and have a very real source for juvenile BichirBichir and am in the process of discussing getting a handfull exported to Europe VIA a German importer as a one off.
If it is viable, and even POSSIBLE one will be going to a now ex member of these forums (think big tank, bigger thread) and the rest to whomever. BUT they will not even be close to £20, that is for sure LOL!
Here is a pic of 1 I personally took at the source. 100% genuine BichirBichir:
