Hi

I am new to this forum and new to tropical fish keeping also.

I have recently purchased a Juwel Lido 200 and have read up on cycling the tank correctly.
My question is that i am looking at keeping angels in this but have read that they can sometime do not so well in a new tank, so will be looking at adding these in a few months down the line.

Because of this though i was wondering what fish would best be kept with angels in this tank and any advice that people have on what they have found has worked for them.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome! :)
I'd say they can be kept with any fish over about 1.5 inches so long as they're reasonably thick. For example, neon tetras are a no but larger types like flame tetras or chery barbs should be safe in most cases. Also fish that nip at long fins or have long fins should be avoided.

I'm a big fan of Angels, I've generally found them to be reasonably hardy, but it doesn't do any fish harm to go into a more 'mature' tank.

As said, smaller tetra's are a no no, but to be honest I would be more worried about what won't bother your angels in the long term. Avoid anything that could be described as 'nippy', lots of tetra's and Barbs have this next to their names. And if anything is going to be nipped your angels will be, slow and with flowing fins, they are easy targets.

I would avoid most loaches, these sucking fish seem to love bothering angels, their fins and their bodies soon become aggravated.

I have kept them mine with South American Cichlids - Firemouth, Blue Acara, Rams, but when mixing Cichlids, you always have to watch out for personalities. Things like Cories, Plecs and most other bottom feeding fish mix well. Although I would say these need a more established tank than yours just yet, they graze on algae and growths in Microfilm that take a while to establish.

If you pick a group of decent sized 'peaceful' barbs or tetra's then you should be fine to get started once your tank has cycled.

Thanks very much for the advice.

I really like the look of the Firemouth and Blue Acara. i will look into these in a bit more depth, see what they need and see if i can get them in once the tank has cycled in a few weeks.

Will also take the advice of the Plec i think but with the tank being cube shaped will try stick to smaller ones. Then hopefully when i add the Angels in a few months everyone will get on peacefully.

Thanks again!
