Neocardina breeding

Hey all!

So I am looking to get myself a new 50L to start breeding Neocardina. I have kept tropical fish before having 6 years ago a 40L and a 100L tank. I was breeding and selling guppies to my local pet store and stopped after a while.

I have been looking into Neocardina as a potential for breeding and selling. I have never kept shrimp before so I would welcome any advice, tip or tricks in this journey. I am a horticulturist by trade and am very excited to eventually share pictures of the planted tank.

To emphasise, when it comes to shrimp, I am a novice so any links to pages would also be welcome.

I fell into Neos unintentionally. I had a good fish friend who was pretty much an expert on the inverts and nano-tanks. She sent me a few red cherry Neo. davidi. that was about 15 years ago and i still have a tank filled with them. Some years later another friend needed to shut down some tanks and rehome the fish. She wanted somebody to adopt things, I did and part of it was about 10 of the Blue Dream variety of the davidi. About a year later I got another 6 at my fish club's monthly auction.

Today I have well over 125 of the blue dream and have also sold a few 100. I am not an invert person. But my water and plants seem to be vert good for the shrimp. My pH ranged from 6.8 to 7.2 with normal being neutral. My water is also soft which they need. My TDS out of the tap can be as low as 53 ppm and as high as about 120 ppm. But normal is 83 ppm.

I have a private well, I do not need dechlor. But what changes the tap parameters are reainfall levels. When there are drought conditions the numbers are at their higher end. When there is excess rain for an extended perion the revcerse happens with the numbers dropping. However, most of the time they are in the middle.

Neos do not need much GH the way Caradinas do. But my tanks also have amanos which thrive. I have kept the manos in a few of my planted tanks for many years.

I usually have jungle planted tanks packed with plants. I have the Neos in a 15 and a 29 gal. tank. I do add food for them and they have a lot of algae as well. I used kensfish veggie sticks with calcium, Jehmco's Algae wafers, Ebo-Aquaristik shrimp food and for the cherrys an occasional Shrimp Stick.

Not much to it. They will pretty much take care of themselves. Buy high quality stock to start off - most of what you get off the internet is pretty low grade. Don't mix colours and if you want to produce quality stock you have to be strict on culling, or have a second / community tank (for the rejects) if you don't fancy that.
