hey everyone. seems like a swell place to be. :)

i wan't to breed some platies but my other fish (phantoms, comet, bloodfins) eat the poor things before i can save them. i know about breeding traps and stuff, but is there a way i can keep my 20 gal community tank and yet breed some platies in the same unit?

ty

EDIT: sorry mod team, i just seen that not to ask fish questions here. forgve me.

Hi
do you have a spare tank if so keep that cycled and when your fish is close to gining birth put her in that
i wouldn't use breeding nets i think their to stressfull for fish.

hey ty for the response.:) no extra tank here. but that would be great. i just seen about a "v" trap. ever hear of that? would it work?

Sorry to butt in, but if a "V" trap is what im thinking of, it most likely will not work. The slit in the bottom for feces to fall through is far to big of a gap and usually the babies can slip thru if the sucking power of the airflow to the baby chamber doesnt take them. A v trap is roughly the size if not smaller than a breeding net by the way.

Hi, a V trap is a plastic cage that floats on top of your water and the Mom stays in the top and as she has the babies they fall through the V at the bottom so she can't eat them. As soon as she is done you take her out and remover the V. You can leave the babies in this v trap but the other fish in the tank can and will suck the babies through the wholes in the bottom, I always put the new babies in a net tank that will attach to the side of your tank and float on the watar. This net t ank will keep them safe untill they are big enough to swim with the big fish. This saves having to have a tank just for babies, I have raised many babies this way over the years and sold them happy and healthy!

you could always buy some kind of floating plants, so when the platies give birth the fry can hide in there :D
and like you all said a V trap is a plastic box around 6-7 inches long, i dont use it for my platies only some of my guppies because the platies get bigger than the guppies.
your best bet would be some floating plants, like hornwort or water sprite, good luck :D
