I got a halfmoon betta on Friday morning, he is living in a cycled, planted 6.4 gallon tank. He is lovely and he seems very lively and healthy, but he is still stressed (he came through the mail from Thailand). He sometimes swims around but spends a lot of time sitting on the bottom/plants or darting around quickly. I tried giving him frozen bloodworm, he sucked it in but spat it back out, and today I tried Hikari betta pellets but he ignored them. Im kinda worried as he will have gone quite a while without food (he was posted on Tuesday so thats at least 4 days without food).

Should I be concerned or do you think he will settle soon? Here are a few pics for anyone interested:

He's stunning! Fish can go around 2 weeks without eating so I wouldn't worry too much.

You could try soaking the food in garlic to make it smell more appealing, boost his immune system, and soften it so it might be easier for him to eat.

He is gorgeous and his tank is very cool looking.  I got a Betta this week and he spent a lot of time hiding at first.  Now he is swimming around , exploring the tank.  Hope your guy will settle soon.

He is stunning!

I had a Betta who I rarely saw eat, he would eat maybe 2 pellets from several dropped in. He lived happy and healthy for a year (And then my own stupidity killed him :()
Anyways, he was never a fish to eat overly much, so I wouldn't worry about this boy not eating, he's probably still getting used to his surroundings and the different food thats offered - who knows what he was fed in Thailand? (Maybe e-mail and ask and hopefully you can find something similar sold where you live)

I wouldn't be too bothered by his lack of appetite at the moment.  Bettas tend to not eat when stressed especially from moving.  Keep offering him food to encourage him to eat but remove it after he refuses to eat it so that it doesn't foul your tank.  What is the temperature of the tank water?  Does he have any tankmates in that tank?  How strong is the filter flow?

He is a gorgeous boy and from what I can see in the pictures he looks perfectly healthy.

He looks stunning!

Maybe its just Jetlag.. hehe

He looks healthy though.. He will be okay.. Give him time.. :)

I'll be honest, in the pics I saw of him his fins where yellow not orange. Whether they changed colour because he is stressed or simply because he's matured since they were taken I dont know. Either way I think he looks stunning.

I believe live food is used by the Thai breeders, not 100% but I could give that a shot. I keep the temperature around 80f, I have my other betta in a community tank at this temp and he is fine. The only other tank mates are some small ramshorn snails that came on the live plants (im hoping he'll clear them out for me to be honest!). Im planning on trying him with cherry shrimp once he has settled.

I still dont think his behavior is 'right'. He spends a lot of time sitting either at the back of the tank or just on the gravel. So far he will only eat live food, either daphnia or brine shrimp. I tried frozen bloodworm but he just spits it out. Are daphnia and brine shrimp nutritious? I was thinking perhaps he is sitting around because he isnt getting a good diet? Ive tried floating betta pellets but so far he just ignores them.
