New Filer

I am currently in need of a new filter, At the moment i have a under gravel filter, but the power head is starting to give up on me. So i have started to look for new filters. I don't want a internal filter, as they look bad, so a external or a "hang on" Filter would be my options.
I don't want to by a new power head as as i would like to change my substrate to sand.
So i was wondering what liters per hour Filter would i need for a 20gallon (91 liters)tank?
What would be best? Any recommendations?
Also i like to keep gouramis, and i know they prefer stiller water than most fish.

if you want an external how about an eheim 2213+ the classic eheims are probably 1 of the best filters around. great filtration , quiet and super reliable .

Is the water output a little quick for a tank of my size? Or is there a power adjustment or something ?

if it too quick you can always close the taps on the hoses a little to slow it , or aim the spraybar at the wall of the tank .

it will give you 5x turnover which isnt really excessive .

therei s the tetratec ex700 which is less powerfull. tetratec filters seem to get pretty good feedback from people on here but i cant comment as i have never used 1

i would recommend a fluval external filter for your tank size maybe a 105 or 205. just about to take delivery of a 305 for my bday

I have read MANY MANY filter thread recommendations in 5 months here, and the two that are most often recommended are Fluval and Eheim. This does not mean any other brands are bad - but if you were to buy one of those two brands I think you would be happy.

I've never used Eheim, but I've had a Fluval 205 for months, and it's on my 26 gallon tank. The outflow pipe points toward the front of my bow front, and it creates a fairly big circular current throughout the tank. If you felt that the fish were bothered by it, you could always point the outflow in a different direction, I guess, or check the stats on a 105.
