New Drilled 48x18x18

I've never had a drilled tank before, and wouldn't know what to do with it....can you guys help me out? It's 48x18x18 with the drilled parts as shown in pics. I know it'd be great for sw but that's out of my budget atm, is there anything I can do with those and fw? What exactly would I be doing? Connecting to sumps? Like I have no idea so could you guys give me some pointers as to what I could do? thx

Don't know how useful this will be but basically, the drilled hole directs water down to a sump, in this sump you have filter media, once the water has passed through all the chambers, a pump is used to return water back into the main tank.




Just a very quick picture of how my sump looks like (Click on pic if you want it bigger).

The red dots are bioballs in the 'trickle section' and the green dots are crammed full of pot scourers and ceramic rings.
 
Yeah I figured I'd hook it up to a sump...what size would be good for a 48x18x18? I'll assume a 10g is too small...is a 20g good? 20 long?
