Right I think I've finally come to a decision.... A new discus setup.

This is something I haven't done before but I've got some thoughts already and been on a couple of other forums for advice, but I tend to trust this one more :good:

I'm thinking a really nice couple already paired up so they won't need a crowd (so I've been told) with a load of cardinals, a smallish plec (probably a rusty), some sterbai corys and a couple of rams.

Tank will be a juwel rio 180 (if thats big enough) with an eheim prof 3 2075, should turn the tank over about 7 times an hour. Sand substrate with some nice plants and root style bogwood as decoration.

Thoughts?

I don't think the rio 180 is big enough for discus. They do best in a group to my knowledge, mated pair or not. They should be kept in something of a 75 gallon tank to allow them room to turn around, as they get pretty large. a standard 55 gallon works okay, but from the photos I've seen with discus in a 55, they seem awfully cramped when facing outward rather than from one side to the other. imo a pair of discus needs no less room than a group of six.

The pleco is also somewhat unnecessary. They're dang messy, and in some cases my pester discus.

I have a breeding pair in a 55 gallon and i think it is pleanty of room. The pair are with a pair of apistos, some rummy noses and some sterbai corys.

I would say that the rio isnt big enough either, the 240 would be just ok I would say, also the rio 180 is only 47 US Gal

I've had a change of plan, I've got a juwel vision 260 in storage so think i'm going to use that instead of getting a rio 180.

already got everything ready to go just need to stock it, get substrate/plants etc.

How many discus could I get in a 260 litre?
