New Aqarium (And New To The Hobby)

After searching glofish, they look really pretty, but they HAVE to be dyed, which is a horrible process for a fish to have to go through.

At first in my biOrb, I just had some pebbles and a fake plant in the middle, but the real plants I have in there now are just good for keeping the nitrate, nitrite and ammonia levels in check.
I'd also have to say that you should try not to buy too many fish in the first few weeks, as new tank syndrome really sucks.
I lost four platys, and a beautiful male and female betta to it, so I'd really be careful with that

Yeah the GloFish are not dyed, I knew that, I know the fish your talking about though, I wouldn't do it personally knowing they had been harmed as such.

Been around a few fish shops today and no where had any pure ammonia, only the stupid ammonia killing stuff which I don't need at the moment. Which reminds me, The tank came with some 'water treatment' to keep Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia down which sounds pretty useless.

After looking at the fish in the face this is my new list.

Flying Fox/Red Tail Sharks
Cardinal Tetra
Red Fighter
Tuxedo Swordtails
Coolis Loaches

This will probably reduced as I don't think my tanks enough when they grow, and no I won't get new tank syndrome, going to introduce each one over each week.

Just got my tank setup today, heater seems be taking forever to do anything though, Set it to 32 degree's to help the bacteria but its been for about 4 hours now and thermoment says water is still 18 degree's or less. Guess it takes a while but thought it would have raised slightly by now.

i''ve heard alot on hear that neon tetras aren't hardy and shouldn't be the first fish in.

Also, boots do do the ammonia, i had to go into a shop and order it in to collect another day, its called household ammonia, white bottle and red top...check online boots

Yeah I asked for Pure Ammonia in the ship, woman said no and gave me a weird look, probably thought I was up to no good aha, Will go there gain tomorrow and look for the household stuff.

She probably put your name on a terrorist list or something! Maybe if you explain it's for cycling an aquarium. Some enterprising person in the UK should start selling the pure stuff out of their home...

One of the companies I use for some other chemicals at work sell ammonia i'm sure, if they do I'm going to start selling it in a simple form for us lot but then again if boots can do it at £1.80ish a pot, its pretty pointless because after posting charges would be about £3-4 for a similar amount...

And yeah don't wanna go into that boots again now...

On another note, I have a freshwater pond in the garden, and wondered if it would be recommened to go get some of the mature media out of it? Or is the outdoor environment too different? It's completely untreated, everything in the pond lives though it's own way, nothing is changed by humans etc, El' Naturel

An interesting thought. I would be curious to hear if anyone has done this. But you have no large filters in that pond? What media would you grab from, I wonder?

It does have a filter, suppose I lied slightly then that's the only thing in the pond.

The only thing about using filter media taken from an outside pond,you may be into the tank nasties that might not do tropical fish so well...i hear lychees are a problem once they take hold in an aquarium...

I'm no expert by any means

Another question, my heater is doing it's thing at the moment at 30 degrees, but my external thermometer is saying 26....how accurate are these things? It's been slowly creeping up all day but seems to be sticking at 26
