My Weird Little Guppy

Just wanted to share a photo of what I lovingly refer to as my 'mutant freak', Hot Shot is his name.

Just curious to see what you all think of him. Is he a normal pet store mutt? An inbred freak? Guppies have never exactly been my center of interest in the fish world, so I don't really know what he is supposed to look like, just that he is way different from the other males we have around. He was plucked out of my turtle's tank, chosen by random when I decided I wanted to experiment with guppy genetics, and he's really grown on me since then. He's a bit smaller, feisty as can be, and the ladies seem to simply adore him! That's how he got his name, I swear he thinks he is Poseidon's gift to guppies! Oh, and don't be fooled, no one took a bite out of him! If you look closely, you can see his tail fin is fully formed, round and clear...with what, a 'sword' on the bottom end?

I'm not really into Guppies but I think you may actually have an Endler, or an Endler hybrid on your hands.
Endlers and Guppies can interbreed, but his colors do to me appear to be one of the many variations in Endler color:

As you can see, some of those examples also have the 'sword' like extension on them (Ironically enough there is a live bearer known as a sword tail, but I don't think they can breed with Endlers or Guppies, I believe then can cross breed with Platy's though. m

I second the endler hybrid. I have one that looks very similar that i raised from a baby. It was weird because all of his brothers and sister looked like regular guppies. One of his grandparents must have had a little fling with an endler. lol

Hmm, I never considered a hybrid. I suppose that's entirely possible, who knows where that little pet store I picked up his parents/grandparents from got their stock. A few generations down the line and traits like this start popping out? That's actually very interesting! I suppose I will have to remove the 'freak' title from him then, lol! Thanks for the insight!

What is that tail shape called? I have two guppies that look completely like normal guppies but are growing tails in the same shape as the picture in the first post (except they are fully colored with no transparent bits).

I agree that your guppy appears to have a good smattering of endler genes in him, there are swordtail guppies (not to be confused with the other liver bearer called a swordtail - Xiphophorus species) as well as pin tailed and lyre tailed.
I currently have a nice little male guppy deep blue/ black in colour with a double pinned tail, I am hoping to breed him and get more to start another interesting strain of guppy.

OK it is time for my opinion. I think you have a very nice looking guppy. It may have a bit of endler in its background but is better characterized as a guppy. You are seeing some of the color variations of an endler but fin shape and such point in a different direction. My guess is that your fish may have seen a bit of endler a generation or two back but is basically a guppy. Maybe it can be brought along to represent a better guppy and thus be valuable to some degree.

I see no endler, just similar colouration to the "black bar endler"
Dorsal is far to big, to suggest endler.

The tail look's like a "lyre tail" which either the top point has not developed or it has lost it at some point of it life
