Well after a few weeks of speculation as to the gender of my Heros Severus I now know that I have a pair as I have come home tonight to a batch of eggs laid on the glass near the filter outlet :D Dad is fanning them and mum is just chilling looks like a little fight broke out while they got it on as there is sand everywhere and she has a nasty bite to her head but it should heal.

Sorry for the dirty glass I skipped out on the side panels for a few weeks as my twig catfish have been munching quite a bit haha

So I would guess my tank is keeping them happy right now ;)

At the moment im not sure if thats a good or bad thing for you but congratulations on the eggs :good:

Im taking it as good to be fair mate, no signs of aggression to the other fish in the tank my nic and gold sev are right bellow the spawn site.

My only worry right now is the eggs are quite high up so a bit worried how water changes will interact with this - hoping they will have hatched by Sunday at the latest...

More good news - in light of these eggs my mrs has agreed to a new 4x2x2 when I get my first full time pay packet which should be this side of xmas :)

Its working out alright then. Would the tank not be ok with just a few days longer before a WC? glad to here about the new tank. Hope you find one alright after all the problems youve had :good:

Well the order of the new tank is a future prospect so not pinning much on it right now but when I do get it Im getting it new and with full delivery and positioning.

As for now once the rehoming plan becomes reality then I will feel a lot more confident but right now I think the tank will be fine. Water change can probably wait but Im tied to doing them on weekends at the moment as me and my girlfriend are on 12 hour days at the moment so too tiered to face them on a night time see how it goes though.....

At least you shouldnt have any problems then.

12hour days i feel for you. Sure you will have it all sorted the way you want it soon.

Oh biggest congratulations Wills :good: They should hatch by Saturday if spawned today if they hatch the same as the rotkeils

Ohh how exciting! Are you going to try and breed them do you think?

Now that is a great result !!!

Don't hold out too much hope for the fry in your tank, but if they've done it once, they are extremely likely to do it repeatedly.

Congratualtions!

That's one heck of a quick spawn-hatch cycle... Guess it evolved to give the babies a better chance of survival free-swimming, rather than being eaten while still in the eggs.

Thanks guys :) Not got time to raise the fry properly at the moment unfortunatly so going to let nature take its course with them - harsh but now they have started breeding Im sure it will happen again.

The females bite is quite nasty actually quite a big bump on her and a little gaspy actually. Ive got some melafix so added a half dose to see if it helps it shouldnt hurt the eggs though I dont think.

excuse my ignorance, but I thought heros severus were mouth brooders?

Delayed mouthbrooders, they will pick the fry up in their mouths when they hatch - I had to look it up as well haha

Thats what I thought, therefore, in theory, you have a better chance of rearing the fry, rather than them being picked off by the other fish :good:
