My Severums Have Laid Eggs

That always confused me with "mouthbrooding severum" after watching the frontosa tumble eggs, sevs mouths just are not big enough

Congrats Wills, keep the pics coming!

I have serious sev envy right now after seeing all these pics from yourself and Star!

Only one day to go and my juvie rotties will be settling in nicely, then I'll be joining the club

Thanks again guys

Got home tonight and a few less eggs there but still a decent bunch left.

Quite worried about the female now as the bite looks really nasty she has quite a bad lump with a few small white patches but it is rather bad - going to get some melafix to try and deal with it - if needs be I will sacrifice the eggs to save her as this could get quite bad. I dont know how it was caused either by banging into something or if someone has had a go at her - either the male or an other fish could have done it Im not sure :(

Can you up the water changes? That should help a great deal, I'm almost tempted to suggest it works better than melafix...but it is a LOT more work obviously

My Keyhole banged himself on the heater once. Well, maybe burnt as well. He had a spot under the heater when I used to have it in the corner when I first set it up. My GT swum by a bit too close and surprised him - he's a very easily startled fish - and he jumped up and banged himself with a hell of a wallop. He had quite a chunk out of his head, which was white. All I did was keep the water clean and it healed completely in a week.

I take it the bite is pretty deep? I've never tried Melafix, but I know you are pushed for time, otherwise I'd always say do extra waterchanges.

Yeah I think extra water changes are the way to do this - now they are breeding I might get a small tank to keep eggs in - I also want a divider as well to try and separate them for a little while.

Ill try and do 2 lots of water changes this week end and then aim for an other on Wednesday.

Its not really a bit it really is a lump Ive got a feeling she will loose the scales and then it will heal but it really does look nasty.

If you are overly worried about the bump, water changes and half dose with melafix (safe then for the eggs aparantly so I have read) Dont forget as she has just spawned she will be a little weaker and her immune system may also be low so will take a little longer to heal. :good:

I am so glad you decided to keep them because I had been discussing with my hubby about having them when I saw the add

Yeah def keeping these two now :)

Still got most other fish for sale still/ free (depending on which fish like)

Just done the weekly water change and going to keep a regime up over this week so we measure it in these big buckets we have so today was 2 buckets (normal change on a saturday) then its going to be 1 bucket tomorrow and again on Monday leave it Tuesday and then 2 Buckets Wednesday - see where we are at that point then maybe 1 Bucket Friday and then back to 2 Buckets on Saturday.

The eggs have all gone now though - I dont think any survived but I think about 15-20 hatched not sure what happened to them though I thought Dad might have them in his mouth but not seen anything.

Wills

Newly hatched are so tiny I dont think you would see any difference in the male or female's mouth yet, just keep watch if it looks like they are chewing gum they may have the fry in their mouths, well thats what it looks like with my frontosa, these could be completely different

Fingers crossed the fry are in there and just evading your eyes!

I saw some baby Nics on sale today at £8 for two, thought of your sig and went...
drool.gif
! Any thoughts on how they might behave with my Barilius, Opsarius, Redlines and my Ctenopoma (once they have grown up from being cute 2cm babies)? I'm guessing your Nic (s?) were in the same tank as your Lacutris babies, which are boisterous like my Barilius and Opsarius.

I also became enlightened about Blagdon Powersafe kits today and I might be able to sort out Nelly's old 5x2x2 for £93-95 in the garage!
w00t.gif
(hence the random thought about Nics).

Have you found a home for your Lacustris group yet and are you now thinking of keeping all eight Headstanders together (I could not see them in your ad)? I might, just might, be in a position to make an official offer on both in the very near future, if you don't find lucky collectors in the meantime ;)

I imagine Nics would be fine with the faster fish but unsure of the Ctenopoma to be honest - not too much of a natural mix :/ Not sure what the Blagdon stuff is? Is it a powersource? Im sure you get Blagdon as a pond brand so guessing its a power pack for a pond:D

Just had an email for the rainbows today but he wants me to travel pretty far which Im not able to do at the moment and since they are free hes having a bit of a joke  and to be fair they are nothing "that" special the annostomus I have not put up because I am still unsure if I want to keep them or not haha. Let me know though :)

Wills

Yep, same Blagdon brand, here is the new plan of action...

The 15m and 10m kit versions were £140 and £120 in Romsey today, so this offer would almost be half price for the 20m, which leaves plenty of slack!

Once everything is assembled and I transfer over the Eheim 2078 filter and a fair portion of the Rio240 water, I'm thinking of immediately transferring the...

  • Opsarius pulchellus
  • (Vicious little {blank}) Barilius canarensis (although they may well be the bakeri species documented by Heiko Bleher [small world with Heiko posting here recently] in this PFK article
    http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=50 )
  • Barilius dogarsinghi (to be confirmed, but likely candidates, 9 dark tiger stripes on flank plus a dark spot where body meets caudial fin)
  • Puntius denisonii (although they are so placid I might keep them in Rio until they get bigger)
  • Aplocheilus lineatus "Golden Wonder" (although again, they are still young and are so placid with tankmates and very inquisitive when I go near the tank)

Okay need some serious help now -

The females wound is getting worse it is open and white and looks like the swelling is making the wound open more and more. There is quite a bit of redness all over the wound as well.

What do I do???

I have dosed the tank with Primafix and I am planning to do an other water change tonight not sure how much to do though - do you reckon a small one or a normal one?

Please help ASAP

Wills

As large as you can make them when you have open wounds, plus re-dose afterwards. Any chance you can seperate her in a QT tank?

Thanks not got a QT tank big enough for her only got an arc 35 which isnt a realistic QT tank for her at all. Started to dose Melafix along with the Primafix now as well. See what happens - planning an other water change tomorrow.
