My New Tank Size Theory

Well, you need to consider the amont of waste, and if theyre active.

For example.

You couldnt keep as many platys in a tank as stocking guidlines suggest. They are high waste producers.

You couldnt keep as many zebra danios in a small tank because they are active.

It also depends on the amount of water changes and surface area and filteration.

Im no expert but thats what ive gathered over time.

your correct but it's tank size for a fish, so they can live a 'lazy' fish a would still use the same limits on as it will have a tank big enough. a active fish will still have enough room i think. as for surface area i can think of exceptions think of a tank hardly any bottom or surface area but huge in the middle with slopping sides to the small top that could be a million gallons and you saying as it has hardly any room at the top you couldn't keep a small middle dweller? i never brought water changes in as that doesn't affect at all what size tank a fish needs.

i know there are loads of exceptions to the rule btw so that's why i let it go ages ago but it got bumped back up lol.
