My New Rescue, Kato!

No, he has not eaten yet :(. I'm almost certain that nothing is lodged. I can see clear through his mouth and I don't see anything there. Since he can't eat, this must be recent and not a natural deformity or he would have died a while ago. I was thinking of going to go the pet store later, should Itry any other meds? I've done Melafix for bacterial, and I've put salt in the tank.

I have just read this thread. You are doing all you can for the little fella. I wouldn't try any other meds he seems lively enough. I have never come across this mouth thing before. If you have tried closing it and it comes open I would imagine his mouth is damaged. don't worry too much about him not eating I leave mine a week when I go away without food and they are fine. I would leave him a day or two so he settles. As I said I have never come across this before but I hope he pulls through...

I feel bad saying this...but he's still alive! And he made a bubble nest!!!!!! I don't know how thats even possible with his mouth the way it is, but he has a wittle one!! His fins are growing in too, you can see the clear edge around the torn bits.
And...because I tend to take pictures of absolutely everything...here's his teeny nest!

But...still hasn't closed his mouth :(, or eaten. I think I am going to try him on some flake food. Maybe he could, sorta inhale it as he swims by it? Or maybe brine shrimp, or someone even reccomended liquifry.

Certainly try flake food.

I had a guppy fry with the same thing happen. And I think it was just because he ate something too big for his tiny mouth. I treated him normally, and with time he snapped it back himself. All I can say is flake food, as they do not have to chew it, and it will be soft on his jaw. Dont try any more pellets.

I posted about your fish on another forum, and they say he will probably starve to death in the end. So that stuff you feed live fry on would be good. Or flake if he will take it. Keep us updated on him. Bless building a bubble nest.

He's such a little cutie!

Good luck with him, what an awful story.

I'd complain directly to the manager of the pet store, take in pictures of your boy when you first got him and such and tell him what a bad set up it is. Especially if it happens all the time.
Try it, you might save more bettas from getting torn up like him.

Keep us updated, I want to see more pictures!

Well, I bought some flake food, and he ate two pieces!!! I know thats not enough, but tis a start! As it fell down near his face he just kinda inhaled it, and then jerked his head back a few times and poof! Gone! I'm so excited. Hopefully I can get him to eat some more. I really need to clean his tank but I dunno if moving him to a jar to clean it would be to stressfull...Should I just do a partial by scooping some water out and replacing it? Thanks so much for all your guys help!!

Thats great news,
I'm so happy he was able to eat,
Maybe not prefect but at least its very promising.

Cant wait to see how nice he looks when his fins are grown back :hyper:

I'm really please for you and you done a great thing.

This is him just now, I decided to go ahead and do a water change. Maybe its my imagination, the edges of his tailfin seem to be growing in!!

This WAS his tank about 10 min ago. I snapped the pic and sat down, and then he was stuck behind the filter!!! Ahh!!! Soooo that came out. I was trying to set up some sort of filtration and that came out of the minibow Diego is in because I just got him a Deco nano filter. I thought it might work in his tank and then he goes and gets himself stuck lol. So...scratch the filter idea. I'm gonna have my parents mail be a sponge filter I have for up to 5 gallons, so hopefully that will do the trick. Or I can get another nano filter :p. Im loving it so far. (Note: I know this is a small tank. I'm a poor college student and this was an unexpected buy so this is all I can manage for now!)

im not 100% but i think i heared somewhere that they will only make nests if they are in good health and in good conditions. i could be wrong but i hope im not. hope hes ok. if you still think that his injury is due to fighting, then there is one person i know of in this forum that used to fight betta's and maybe he could tell you. i wont say his name but if he reads this post im sure he will know.

I apologize for posting so much, this must get annoying, but...we have made progress!I left some flake food floating in hopes that when he comes up for air he would accidentilly get some in his mouth, since he wasn't actively seeking it out. Well...I was watching him and he went up for air and got food in his mouth and spit it out like "Ummmm what was THAT?" Then he swam after it and gobbled it up! Then he went back up a few times for more! Ok sorry...hopefully I can hold of posting the next time he takes a bite hehe. Just had to share!

I am so happy for you! He seems to be doing well, eh? I'm so glad to see his fins are growing in & that he's made a bubblenest; he looks very good compared to his first pictures!! :D
I hope he continues to do well; looks like you've done a great job with him so far!!
& yeah, bubble-nesting is a good sign!! :)
