Went to the Lfs today to look for a nice shoal of dithers, but as usual gravitated straight towards the cichlid section and couldn't resist this guy (anyone able to tell me gender would be brill)......

I am confused as to what it is  I first thought Metae or diadema, then next pic too much blue so though wild blue acara, but my wild blue has no second spot!!! which ever I think its male being slender in the body.

Looks like a type of port acara Cichlasoma portalegrense
I think . I would say female because of the slope head male acaras tend
to be a little more boxy.

Very nice fish I would have wanted it too.

Agree.

As for species, it's a difficult one to call, without knowing it's history.

A.metae, A.diadema and C.portalagrense all can look incredibly similar to me.

It was sold to me as a "Brown Acara".... I had thought on first sight c. Portalagrense.

I will try and get some better pics with the digi cam tonight rather than with the IPhone hopefully that will help ID him/her!

On a side note i'm diggin the dempsey in 1st pic :p

Aside from the face, it looks like a dempsey  Crikey, i like blue acaras too then :p

Yep the fish in the first pic is a Blue Acara (Also my chocolate cichlid is hiding in their too but can't make him out too well).

Just got the missus a v nice/good Sony digital camera for her bday so will put it to good use later and take some nice pic's of my whole setup for you to feast your eyes on! :)

The new fish is either Cichlasoma portalegrense or Cichlasoma bimaculatum
Firstly, I am guessing a little here as the details on either fish are sketchy, they often get ID'ed either way around I think

But I have gotta go with the Cichlasoma portalegrense myself, only because I think I have a Cichlasoma bimaculatum

Distinct differences of your "probable" Cichlasoma portalegrense (CP) to my "probable" Cichlasoma bimaculatum (CB) are:
  • (CP) Blue tint to pelvic fin / (CB) almost no blue tint and is closer to the body colour
  • (CP) Blue tinting to the front of the head and around the eyes / (CB) more uniform colouration throughout
  • (CP) More brownish colouring towards the top and front / (CB) more uniform colouration throughout
  • (CP) Different tinting to the outer edges of the dorsal fin and tail / (CB) more yellow throughout dorsal fin and tail
Here's a recentish pic of my "probable" Cichlasoma bimaculatum:

Check out what the portalegrense can look like when fully mature, awesome looking fish!

So finally got round to asking the missus to take some more pics of the new addition with the camera......
