My Kind Of Science

it's the end of the world as we know it :)
or should that be the end of the universe?
run around in circles screaming "we're all gonna die"

i'm quite excited about this, no doubt I wont be able to understand any of their findings, but exciting all the same!

I heard it could provide information that could help provide other forms of energy.its like 1 in 50million chance of creating a blackhole..more likely to win the lottery twice.

It’s easy to understand. They are going to shoot (yes Gaz, guns are involved :) well not quite a normal gun) a couple of protons (part of an atom) at each other and watch what happens when they collide. Theoretically it will provide a "Big Bang" like at the beginning of the universe. It could create life or blow us all to Kingdom Come.
The Big Bang however, is only going to be tiny so there won't be anything to worry about. Unless someone didn't do their calculations right. Then we're all up the crapper.

They used particle accelerators in the Ghost Buster movies. Except on the movie they were small and fitted into a backpack, not 27km long :) lol

Hmph. I dont understand why they "need" to make this, but whatever. It will not destroy the world.

The way that I understand it is...any blackhole created would not only be tiny, but blink back out of existence almost instantly. Besides...if we did manage to destroy the world this way at least it'd be quick way to go ~ XD

If one did survive, it wouldn't be quick. Each one would be absorbing particles at a very slow rate. By the end of the universe, each one might have removed a gram of material from the inside surfaces of the particle accelerator. So if these doomsayers are right, there's a very real chance that in a few hundred thousand years, the LHC will no longer be able to continue functioning while millions of tiny black holes slowly throw it off of tolerance.

But these black holes aren't new. They've been created before, and the results were pretty boring, even for a science nerd.

If worse does come to worse, at least Gordon Freeman is already on the scene.

Hit two things together as hard as you can to see what happens - you'd think CERN had made Jeremy Clarkson head of research!

The basis of all real science........

variations include

mix these & see what happens

take these & come back in 2 weeks

lets make it 100x bigger & see what happens

LOL
