My Journey - Fish Keeping

Wow. If i took over from the boss I'd have no time whatso ever. He put's in at least 70 hours a week. He is commited.
I can just to say manage my avarage of 56 hours a week. Need too to. Like you we have a weekend visit to the aquarium centre. Always spend more than we can afford.
Keep up with the images Renee. They are great. I like your choise of gravel in this new set up too.

 I did most of my bosses work so now I am boss I can give someone else my old work load (however I help my Design consultant out alot more than my boss helped me out  ) but back to reality and my massive work load at the end of next week plus I am on uni holiday this week which helps (I work mon-fri 8-5.30 plus lots of over time and do uni at night I'm crazy :S I tell ya)

Thanks It took me ages to choose the gravel it takes me ages to make decisions on things like that  I love the red in it I am also going to get some really fine grained white gravel to go through the middle like a little sand bed (which would be common in Amazon river)

I have done so much research :book: and am learning heaps from everyone from the forum so this project should hopeful turn out quite well *fingers crossed*

Very Nice! I love your Barbs, they are sooooooo cute! That will be nice set up when you get a few palnts and driftwood in there! Nice cabinet too! GRJ

I have had rather bad experience with Gouramis especially the dwarf kind they are so beautiful but I guess your roght Madgap a combination of tank mates and also water quality.

Your more North and could have better quality water that suits them.

I believe they like a mature planted tank and that would mean softer water our chalk slime is not good thats what really put me off Discus and I suspect why angels I have seen are poor quality.

What would I suggest is really stay clear of them having said that my golden Gouramis has settled on his/her own and is Queen Bee and I have to say when in full flare a very beautiful fish.

as far as keeping angel fish and tiger barbs together i reckon they are fine i have 9 angel fish and 3 tigerbarbs in my tank with other fish and they get along fine.Iwouldnt take my word for it though as i was warned by so many people but still tried it to a succes. They did chase eachother around for a bit the same as adding any fish but after a couple of days everything was fine and i havnt lost anything yet maybe adding more angels than barbs is better so there out numbered and wont try anything thats why i think mine have been fine. Also keeping them well fed works so they dont attack eachother when hungry cus in my tank none of the fish i have should be together but they have been for about 8months now with no problems. They tigerbarbs in my tank tend to stick together and fight eachother and no other fish as wellhope you find this usefull :good:

yes angels do go with tiger barbs. the notorious problem of the barbs fin nipping can be very much supressed if the barbs are kept in groups of 5 or more. they will chase each other around and leave other fishes alone.

Looks great so far....only thing I would do is add a nice rock background Juwel ones I think.
But just me - still looks good, youve made a nice job on the gravel.

Hi Tetra Queen ... I have heard Dwarf Gouramis have probs with disease........ all the fish I will have in my tank will be soft water lovers so maybe they might work I'm not sure I will ask a couple of Aussies whom keep Dwarf Gouramis because most people whom have mentioned disease probs with DG are from abroad :)

Hi Dave thanx for the advice :good: what other fish do you have in your tank with the Angels and Tiger Barbs?
yes angels do go with tiger barbs. the notorious problem of the barbs fin nipping can be very much supressed if the barbs are kept in groups of 5 or more. they will chase each other around and leave other fishes alone.
Great thanx Straydum ... I have heard of cases where Barbs even being kept in a group of 6 or more have attacked and killed their angel tank mates but it seems that in other cases they seem to co exist fine.

Ok so I am going to start stocking my tank on the weekend, I have thought maybe I will try keep my Barbs since some people have them living quite happily with angel fish but at the first sign of problem they will be evicted (and rehomed)

ok so currently I have 6 Barbs in my tank and here is a list of fish I want to slowly add to my tank:

Rummy nose Tetra ( 8 )
Angels (4)
Bolivion Butterfly Ram (m&f)
Blue Ram (m&f)
blue spot pleco (m&f)
Zebra Pleco (m&f)

I don't think thats over stocking but be sure to let me know if you think it is :)

and I want to get a few fish this weekend which ones do you think I should add first? (please remember 6 Tiger Barbs are already in the tank)

Again, the rams may be a problem. The tank is only 3 feet, so I'm not sure how well they will get along. Try, but be sure you have a place to put em' if things get nasty. Also, a long tailed ram variety may be something to stay away from, as the barbs may end up nipping them, I am not sure if you would rather try to keep the barbs, or just keep the rams. Rummy nose tetras, well be bad news. The barbs will nip em', and the Angels may eat em'. Try something bigger, like Congo tetras, or Columbian tetras. Everything else seems fine, although the tank doesn't look 50 gallons to me, are you sure thats correct?

BTW if you want to try to keep your barbs with a better rate of success, then stay way from any long/veil tail variety fish.

ok maybe I will just rehome the Barbs .... sure is a 50gal it is 3 foot in length but is a much longer width than most standard 3 foot tanks don't have the mesuremants on me at the moment but I find them and post just to make sure.

I know babrs are fin nippers and best to stay away from slow moving long finned fish but I have spoken to a few people on this forum and to my suprise they keep barbs with Angels so I thought I may be able to make the community tank work with Barbs but I really don't want to risk any of my fish being terriorised by the Barbs so i guess I am moving away from keeping the Barbs.
