My Guppy Fry Journal

Your new Guppies are lovely, good luck with them this time round.

I had a similar experience as you with lfs stock.

I'm delighted with the Guppies I got from a private breeder last week. They seem to have more vitality and sparkle than from lfs.

Thanks, I got these ones off my friend who got most of his online but some are from LFS but he's never had bother. I think it's better this time as my tanks properly cycled.

Oh I remember reading you bought them do you have pics? I didn't know you had received them!
I have bad news. The female who's pic I put up has died :( she was so pretty. She had a very sunken in belly, it was horrible but you were all right, she was pregnant as I HAVE FRY!!!

I came home from shopping and noticed the snails had uprooted the crypts AGAIN so I opened the tank to sort them and saw a tiny blonde thing darting around the top. In my panic I grabbed the breeder box, turkey baster, net and bucket. I managed to get it and put it in the trap, as I was hooking the trap to the thermometer I noticed something sitting on the leaf so got that one too, then one came to the top, then another I have 5 or 6 in the box! I don't know for sure as I can't find my glasses  My plants are bunched in the middle of the tank as the snails kept uprooting them but I think there might be some more in there.

I have never had guppy fry before-I never kept them alive long enough to mate never mind have fry so anything special I have to do? I read somewhere that platy fry are more hardy than guppy fry and my baby platy is doing so well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou.

Found another 2! Think I have 7 or 8 now.

Edit: just found another we're upto 8 or 9

Just did a headcount and there's 9

yay!! do you still have moss balls? I put one in my breeder box, so they could eat off it.

Oh no I don't have any left. It all melted  when I put the powder in, I push it down so it falls and they chase it :D
I did a count and still 9, there's 6 blonde, 1 white and 2 grey. So exciting! I didn't see my baby platy eating so i'm not going to worry as such, they are probably less inclined to eat when there's a big face up against the glass

Lol I know!
Well I came back today after an awesome weekend and my boyfriend was in a panic saying he spotted another baby amongst the leaves-he was the one who didn't want babies in the first place and now he's telling me to get the net! So we now have 10 babies.
I was doing a water change and spotted these pointy "dots" on the glass but of course they weren't dots, but baby malaysian trumpet snails-17 of them :hyper: they are so tiny and cute!!! Babies everywhere, I need a bigger tank

:hyper: I have tons of baby pest snails  lol not the same thing. They are eating well because I was feeding the fry often. THIS is why I wanted them in my fry tank.

Yay for the 10 fry! It's so fun watching them grow.

Aww no!! I have an unidentified snail. I have a really big snail which was labelled "tiger snail" which I got from dobies, I have 6 red ramshorns, 5 malaysian trumpet snails and now 17 baby ones - and one really weird snail. His shell is like the cowry shells at the beach and he is white with blue/black spots. I have no idea where it came from but it charges about and I am sure it's the one eating my leaves as the other snails have never done it.

Yeah 10 fry is a lot. I have just ordered a large breeder net to put them in as the marina trap is far too small it's 25cm long by 14cm width and 14cm high. It's not ideal but I don't have another tank so will need to do for at least until they are 3 weeks old so I can release them back into the main tank :) I will need to give some away though :(
I can't wait to see the colours! I am going to end up overstocked and of course over filtered haha!

Ok so I was watching the little ones they are eating well and zipping about. Most of them are blonde, one is white and one is grey. I noticed they all have tiny rounded tails now but the grey ones tail comes to a point-do you think he is getting nipped or do they all develop at a different rate? They are 3 days old.
The sticky thread at the top of this forum is from a while back so the pics dont work. Does anyone have a progress thread of baby guppies please?
Also I saw some live baby brine shrimp on ebay - would they be good for the babies? Here is the link.

Thankyou :D

The one with "pointed" tail may be sick(possibly clamped tail but due to it's small size it's hard to see) They all have rounded tails when small regardless of whether born blonde or grey.
If you are going to keep the fry in the breeder net/box for weeks, then you have to keep up with the maintainance. The holes in those nets/boxes don't provide too much circulation and the water quality deteriorates very quickly.
I've kept fry in a breeder net or box for weeks, but I used to pour tank water every day into it regardless to ensure water circulation as those small holes don't do too much you would be surprised how unhealthy the water inside it becomes.
I would even suggest that you clean the whole box from gunk from time to time by removing everything from it, including the fry. Then they get used of water changes since very young and pay no attention at all :D

Thanks for the reply. Oh no, will he be ok? He is smaller than the rest but still able to swim and he's eating.

I clean it every morning with a turkey baster (I am so slow in case I suck one of the babies up  )I get the old food out and I swirl the sand that's in there. Then I empty the water from the box with a plastic cup, carefully lift the trap up to drain it so there's about an inch left then dip it back down so fresh tank water gets in. Then I move it in front of the filter and let it circulate-thats when they go flying poor things and really try to swim against the flow! I found a snail in the box this morning too
I ordered a net one last night, I have never one what are they like? It's a good bit bigger than the plastic trap so they should hopefully have a wee bit more room it's 25cm across by 14cm width and 14cm high. I will keep them in there until they are about 3 weeks old then let them out hopefully
