My Fish

Sorry, just to check is the tank filtered? Do you have any water movement provided by a filter outlet or similar?
There must be something seriously wrong with your tank if your pleco died just like that.....
Only just read original post

You should always have a thermometer of some sort in/on a tank. They're very cheap, so there's no good reason not to have one.

Ignorance. I always thought that you only needed one for tropical fish. I guess the next time im at pets at home ill pick one up.

Also i do have a filter, and an air filter. I think the pleco was just ill when we bought it because one survived and the other didnt, so i dont think i had much to do with its death as the other one seems to be doing fine.

Don't take this the wrong way, chubby, but it seems that in spite of all the advice you've been given here, you're still choosing to ignore the basic advice that Tropicals and Coldwater fish have different metabolisms, and should be kept separately to give EACH THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS. It seems you're going to ignore whatever anyone here says. Yes, we all get attatched to our fish, but if you're not going to give them the best conditions possible, maybe it's time for a different hobby. You can't keep justifying doing nothing by saying ''They look fine''. PLEASE listen to what we're telling you.

:( Well it just seems weird that even the pet store had them in the same tank, and now im being told that they cant be mixed. Fish arnt all the same, some handle and adapt more easily than others, and maybe because i bought mine when they were babies, maybe they have adapted to the temperature.

LFS always overcrowd their tanks, too. You'd never do in your own tank what you see in 'holding' tanks in the shop. Again, you're trying to find reasons to justify what you're doing. Once again: different metabolisms.

What has metabolism got to do with me returning them though? I've done the tests to prove the water quality is fine (could be better but im working on it) I can understand not mixing say a cloun fish and a goldfish, but a tetra??

As for overcrowding i know they do, but they wouldnt put there stock in any danger, and so wouldnt put fish together that clearly shouldnt be.

they may look happy, my betta that had swimbladder looked happy apart from the floating, IME pets at home and other large chain stores aren't bothered about the fish they just sell as much as they can after all, if they keep dieing then many just go back and buy new ones, in future this is the place for all advice and any info you want about your tank or fish, there a many members here some more experienced than others but were all here to help no matter what

i thoroughly agree pets at home may sell good quality products because i buy stuff from there ..but id never buy fish from there because they dont choose to care for their fish properly...last weekend in every tank they had there adleast 2/3 fish had whitespot or finrot.. so maybe that explains why they had coldwater fish mixed with tropicals.

even if your goldfish look healthy (sorry if im repeating someone) their internal organs will continue to grow when the body doesnt so when they say "they will grow to the size of your tank" is incorrect.

seriously were only trying to do whats best for you and your fish..if you buy a larger tank for the gold fish andbuy a heater for the tropicals..then all is well :D

What sort of tank would i need to buy for the gold fish? Could i not just keep them in the current tank i have and just move the dot the zebra into my spare tank (which is about 5 gallons)

and would my current filter be ok for a 30g tank? its a Fluval 2+.

Bearing in mind that Coldwater fish need thoroughly oxygenated water, either buy a Four+, or simply add a second Two+. I'd go for the second Two+; that way you can clean the filters on alternate water changes - but only in old tank water, of course. Use the venturi attachments on the top, too.

I have the air intake thing stuck on it. As well as a Reno 100 air filter. Would i still need to buy another filter? because my air filter is on 24/7. Should i still get another 2+ just in case?

I was hoping to get a 30g Hex tank, because my current tank is a Hex tank and the room would sort of look weird with a normal tank in it. But if i have to have two filters a hex tank just would be wide enough to house them both. So im hoping the air filter would be enough but obviously i've never had to do this before so what would you recommend? keep both the filter and air filter, or just the two filters.. Or maybe all 3? although would that be running the risk of over oxygenating the water?
