Ok i'm finally going tropical FISHTANK after years of cold - you have all convinced me and my husband is so pleased :)

I would like some help on easy fish to start off with

The tank i'm getting is a juwel rio 180l
size approx 40" x 19" x 16 "

I am transfering all sustrate from excisting tank half the water and using one excisting fiter and adding one new one who's media has been sat in the excisting tank for 2 weeks

as i have been used to cold water fish i havent a clue on stocking amounts

I CURRENTLY HAVE

9 white cloud minnows
8 apple snails

what other friendly non snail eating fish (not shrimp as i have a seperate shtimp tank already) would be good to add
i'm not a novice when it comes to fish keeping but as i said have never had tropicals

MY daughter (3 in october) would like us to have a pink fish if possible so any ideas on that front also hubby want neons are they ok with white clouds

I would just like to know some ideas on stock if possible and are platties easy to keep cos there colours are amazing :)

THANKS any help appreciated

Sarah xxxxx

i been look at pygmy corys are they ok with snails though

i'm not going to get a feature fish for a few months until the tank is well established but when i do i think i would go for the bolivian ram as they are gorgeous and cos they are ok in my ph

BTW my ph is 7.2-7.3

also do all tetra's swim together cos i was looking at getting neons and green neons

PH isnt really neccesary with these community fish, as long as it isnt rediculously low like 5 or rediciulously high ike 9/10, then itll be fine TBH. Pgymy corys will be alot smaller then ur snails so I doubt it :D

so what about the tetras

and do you mean its ok to have the snails and the pygmys together

sorry unless things are clearly spelled out to me i have difficulty understanding due to my MS

It's really not all that complicated.

Don't worry about what fish get on with what other fish. So long as you get platies, minnows, neons, corys and bettas you're never going to have problems. Your tank is sufficiently enormous so that won't be a problem for you either. You should have enough knowledge from coldwater keeping to be able to set up a tropical tank without any of us giving you our advice on that.

Pink is a pretty rare colour in fish. You can however get pink bettas, and I think there's a gourami that's a sort of pale pinkish colour. Some albino varietys look more pink than white too.

Fish to avoid if you want easy care levels:
Most Cichlids
Silver Dollars
Discus
Green and Tiger Barbs
Fin nipping tetras
Bala/Silver and Red Tail Sharks
Piranha (obviously)
Plecos (the "algae sucker")
Angel fish

You CAN keep angels if you want, it's just that they limit your fish choices in future as they tend to end up rather large, meaning they can literally just eat smaller fish!

Fish you should definately get:
Platies.
Corys.
Neons.
Bettas.
Guppys.

And invest in some sunglasses, because with the fish I've just listed you're going to need them. :D

Why are Angels, Pleco's and MOST cichlids on there. Imo MOST Cichlids are easy to care for, Plecos are easy as long as you dont get the common pleco or sailfin which get huge. And Angels are really easy to care for, which are also a Cichlid :P

Because most cichlids are of a medium care level, are quite large fish (compared to my suggestions), and because the most commonly available plecos ARE sailfins and common plecos. I believe I already explained why I advised against Angels.

Don't get me wrong her tank is probably big enough to accomodate all of them within reason, I just think that since she's asking for really easy starter fish then you can't go wrong with shoals of 2" fish like platies etc. in a nice big 180 litre.

If she REALLY wants cichlids then she should go for a dwarf variety like Blue Rams. These can be peaceful and very impressive in pairs. I'd still advise that she get them last though.
