Fish Crazy
Heya,
Recently I just got employed as a freshwater aquarist at a fish shop the next town over from mine. I'm going to leave their name out of this, but they specialize in coral reef tanks, but also feature a section for freshwater. And I gotta say, it's hard work but it's really fun and keeps me busy unlike my first job where I stand behind a counter all day doing nothing.
I've learned quite a lot with my time spent there. I've had the pleasure of meeting discus face to face and also a wide variety of corals, anemones and other marine fish I had no idea existed.
The down side is the two owners, a married couple that tend to bicker a lot and often have different point of views, they seem to rush everything, ESPECIALLY when it comes to setting up the tanks. They don't cycle the tanks well enough, and it results in horrific diseases and much, much die-off of very expensive marine species.
On the plus, they have very professional displays, the tanks are well kept and very spacey. Most of the tanks have pretty healthy coral and fish species. And they feed all of the fish the right foods as well as a decent variety. The fish all seem pretty happy, there's rarely any stressed ones (except for the ones mentioned above), and every employee seems well dedicated to their job.
I love it, sadly, it's only a call-in job because I don't have that much knowledge on the saltwater side.
For the most part it's a pretty awesome hands-on experience.
