Hi everyone,

Bit of a long waffling post so here goes...

I'm new to fish keeping and my only experience is the 65L in the picture below which I have had for 4 years. It started as a tank for two common goldfish to entertain my two year old daughter. I can tell you now that the built in filter just cannot cut it with goldfish so a second one was added which although works very well has cut down on the available space in the tank.

We lost our last goldfish (from the original pair) recently to what looked link swim bladder problems. My wife decided that with an empty tank (still has two Stonesuckers in it), that we could buy some Fancy Goldfish as neither of us have any interest in tropical yet.

A trip to Maidenhead Aquatics (Swindon) for Fancy Goldfish turned into something a little more interesting:
Whilst I had started viewing the fish with my two daughters, my wife had stopped and fallen in love with a new tank. Well it's not just a tank it's a full on Oak cabinet as well.

So what might have been a cheap mornings shopping became slightly more expensive especially as at this point I find out that lighting and filters are not included. (told you I was new to this)

I have four weeks until delivery and will keep you updated on what has now become a project and hence has given me the excuse to read this forum for ideas.

These four weeks will go quite fast as SWMBO has decided it's the perfect opportunity to redecorate the dining room before the tank arrives.

1. Decorate one side of room
2. Move old tank and decorate the other side of the room
3. Take delivery of new tank and cabinet
4. Fit newly purchased Aquamanta EFX 400 external filter
5. Fit newly purchased T5 lighting rig (dual tube) but might have to go to 4 tubes for plant growth
6. Clean cycle tank using filter media from current tank to help (i've been reading this forum)
7. Plant the tank and decorate with stones etc. Will need to research good plants but like the two I already have.
8. Transfer newly purchased fancy fish from 65L tank to their new home along with Stonesuckers

Have I forgotten anything?

Do I have to stick with gravel as shown in the 65L tank? Can I use sand or other substrates with Fancy Goldfish?

Now don't get me wrong... i know it's like a piece of furniture etc, but 600 notes?!

Sorry i've just regained conciousness...

Should look great mate when set up. I would go with a dark substrate though and also a dark background. Your fish will stand out better and the plants will look more effective. Actually quite nice to see goldfish taking centre stage for a change. :) Make sure you don't stock it too heavily though as they require more space than you may think.

And it's great that your missus is onside and actually the one that suggested the new tank. :)

And what does SWMBO stand for?

SWMBO = she who must be obeyed

Yes, overstocking will need to be monitored. It will initially have 6 fantails, 2 stonesuckers but SWMBO has her eyes on a pair of Panda Moor.

I will stop at that and see how fast they grow and also how well this filter copes.

It might sound like a lot but as I said to the missus, this is a lifetime buy. After the four years of fun we have had, we are committing to quite a few years more.

I'm sure we could have bought some of the bits cheaper online but MA did a good job of selling and I admit I am trusting the advice of the two salesmen who seemed to be very knowledgable. In that case they deserved my custom.

I was thinking the same lol, but a lot of "nice looking tanks" new are arround that price!. The oak does look nice though :p

I agree it's nice to see goldfish as a main fish, don't see it so much any more.

I don't think the tank will be big enough for the amount of fish you have mentioned though unfortunately?!

Yes it's quite possible that 8 fancy and two stonesuckers in a 200l tank is too much. I shall be keeping an eye on them as they grow and will rehome if necessary.

I know the price is slightly high but we bought it as a piece of furniture and being oak I expected the higher price.

The other tank we looked at was 150cm long and the oak base was 3 cupboards with 3 draws. The tank was a lot deeper too. That was £999 to buy but would not fit in the space we have.

Picture of the tank I didn't buy although I preferred the styling with a draw above each cupboard. 150cm wide and £999.99

i really liked those tanks too, but i got my MA 5 footer for a steal, i'll just have to put up with it not being solid wood :D

Update...

The wife is doing the painting whilst I am at work this week. Result!

While we wait for the tank to be delivered (24th Sept), I have started the fishless filter cycle in a 35L tank. I could add some mature media from the current tank but that may have an infection of Argulus Fish Louse so I thought it best to start from scratch for the moment.

These aquamanta external filters are so quiet. It's based on the tetratech design so filter media is easy to get hold of.

Update...

The room is 70% painted and the 65L tank has been moved to allow the wife to paint behind it and prepare the space for the new cabinet.

The filter cycle is in it's 4th day and there may just be a tiny reduction in the Ammonia level. Seems to me to be a bit too soon for this so lets see what another 24hrs does.

Great result!

Just seen that MA have an offer on. The 150cm tank you liked is now £800!

I will not cry

To have fitted the 150cm tank would require moving a radiator in the room. I'm happy to grow slowly and if I move house in the next 10 years then maybe something bigger. So long as the one I bought is not reduced this year...

An attempt at photographing my Hillstream Loaches. Need to work on depth of field and a tripod is a must next time. No flash used

Update on water. Still cycling, no movement on Ammonia and water is at a steady 80 degrees. Impatiently wating on delivery of new tank.
