My Current 65L Tank And 200L Fancy Goldfish Project

My 200L tank arrived ten days early. So here it is in the corner of our freshly painted dining room. The silicone is still curing. We had a little sticker attached to the tank asking us not to fill it until after 17th Sept.

The external filter is still cycling in the bucket in the garage. Ammonia is dropping but no sign of nitrites yet. Still a few days early for nitrites. Once we have gravel installed, I will move the cycling over to the tank.

Ooh I'm so excited! Can't sleep, keep thinking about plants and rocks.

Would love to get gravel and fill it full of water but I have to wait until the end of the month for that. That's fine by me as the filter is still mid cycle in the garage and it give me time to make sure this tank is level and locked down in postion.

I plumb in the pipes and lighting cables while I wait.

cycleing in a bucket, why didnt i think of that. i have everything waiting and about 3 weeks until i can fit my tank, so could i cycle the filter in the bucket and then swap it over to the tank and keep an eye on it?

Yes you can.

I'm actually cycling in a 35L storage container like the ones you can buy in Staples for £8. I wanted a big bucket due to the large external I am cycling. It has certainly started the cycle and my Ammonia is going down, I just want to see some Nitrites appear. I have a bit of mature media helping the new filter along and Nitrates is climbing a little so there is some bacteria in there.

A point to note about cycling in a bucket is that you will not grow the full complement of bacteria your filter can house as the limited amount of water will mean that the Ammonia can be eaten too quickly so your cultures will not expand to their max. Not to worry as once you get the filter in your main tank and dose the water to 4ppm, the filter will soon chomp through it and continue to grow.

One final point, I have the heater resting on a plate at the bottom of the container so as not to melt through the plastic. Just a precaution.

Can I ask how they got the tank in place if the silcone still has not set

Seems really strange, would have thought that moving a tank before it's set would put the joints in some risk, I wouldn't have been happy about it at all

Well I tried the tank at the shop when I collected it, ie I pushed my nail into a joint and it is certainly set. I was suprised to see a sticker saying don't fill until the 17th of this month but I see no reason why I shouldn't wait.

It's certainly a fresh build as I can smell the silicon inside the tank but the inner joints are all solid too. Looks like the tank is made to order and the Wooden furniture shipped from Vietnam and stored in some warehouse until required.

I guess we will know the outcome after this weekend when we apply some water to the mix.

Got my light fitings and working out the best place to silicon the mounting brackets at the moment.

I would say that your 100% ok to put water in

When I got my tank it stank to high heaven of silcone

it usually cures within 48 hours but they add another week onto it to cover their backsides.

yeah, but you wait till the date comes along then say you filled it up after the recommended date, so not a biggy :D tbh i very much doubt a tank has ever failed after a 48 drying period, that stuff goes solid!
