My Bn Pleco Is Now 6 Inches Long Without The Tail.

i have read many places that a bn will only grow to a length of 4.5 - 5 inches. mine is now 6 inches without the tail. its definatly a female bn, so what is the estimated length of an adult bn?

i feed her on sinking pellets,algae wafers, potatoes and occasionally cucumber.all my fish have a fasting day every sunday.i dont over feed and i feed my 4 plecos just before lights out, spreading the food/s evenly around the tank to give them all a chance.....my bn is a greedy girl.

one thing i sopose could be worth mentioning is that all the pics i see of bn's show them with a '' fat'' nose if you know what i mean? my girl has a more defined nose. see my avatar pic to see what i mean.and i know males have bristles lol

Are you sure it's a BN? There are dwarf varaties and regulars. Regulars can get good sized. I was at a auction a couple months ago and found a breeding pair for sale. The males was probably 8-9 inches in length (albinos), the female probably 5 inches. So it's possible you have regulars instead of dwarfs.

its too hard to tell from the small pic but the nose doesnt look like a bn it looks more like a common or a sailfin but it could just be the picture

the plec on the potato with her is a 3inch clown pleco, so you can see she is a big girl for a bn.lol maybe she is a common bn afterall? if she grows anything over 8 iches i will need a bigger tank.

how old is she i think she is a common plec looking at the nose
lol you will need a lot bigger tank if she is she could reach 40cm+

im not sure of the age, the lfs couldnt tell me, they did say she was an adult......she was in the same tank as my golden nugget, i bought them both together.

i hope its not a common pleco, i cant house a 6ft tank!! and 40cm is a bit shy, upto 60cm

The name bristle nose covers quite a few fish so sizes do vary. Depending on genetics the size can differ as well. To me it dsnt look like a common the headshape in general is a bit off as is the side of the body, the commons usually have like ridges running down them. Bigger pics though to be 100%

hmm i dont think its a b/n, but plecs are so mixed up, i was once given a pair of b/n plecs, the males was about 5 inch well spiked, and the female was about 8 inch, needless to say the female soon had a new home, no way was that a b/n but difficult to say as they tend to interbreed. di

I'd say she is a bristlenose, ancistrus hoplogenys (sp) rather than the ancistrus dolichopterus.

I have a good 10" + male hoplogenys, he is a beast!! Also commonly known as starlight ancistrus...

Doesnt even look vaguely like a common plec, gibbyceps or otherwise, wrong shape, she is far too flat shaped for a start, she is just displaying her fin in excitement over food etc...

thank you, she is rather lovely.when she flicks her dorsal fin up it usually means she's looking for my golden nugget to '' play with '' so i call it her NOW ITS WAR fin.lol they dont fight as such, they just give each over a nudge and thats it over with.you can see the golden nugget behind her.
