i just came from school and saw my angelfish spawning. i put thr slate in a 1 gallon jar with airpump, meth blue and a heater.

its been about 9 hours and none of them have turned white.

i just wanna know, when will they reach the free swimming stage?

and for how many days could they live in this jar after the free swimming phase cuz i can only buy a new aquarium after april 15th.

am i doing alright?

any help is appreciated. thanks.

cuz this is my first time...and its turning out very well. you know...no white eggs and all.

Yea... depending on the temp,.... they should hatch in about 36 Hours, & then remain on the floor for about another 36 hours, before they're free swimming...... Start hatching brine shrimp on about day 1 after hatching..... Tetramin no.1 for egglayers can also be fed.

oh yes... & add about 2 or 3 Apple snails 1 day after they're free swimming... Their poop develops infusoria which is also very important.....

Mine spawned the other week guarded the egg's really well then turned around and ate them all :( sold them after that as i dont want spawning fish.
Can't comment any further than though sorry.

my pair have laid twice and eaten both spawns but she is ripe again and im going to pinch half the eggs and raise them myself untill they get it right.

well artemia eggs are not gonna be availible here till wednesday. so can i only feed them infusoria till then because i have a very good infusoria culture started now.

The jar will work until they are swimmers, about a week. You may get a few more days out of a 1 gallon jar after that, with daily 50% water changes & a cycled sponge filter. 10 gallon tanks are common & cheap, that should keep the average spawn for another 3 weeks, then you will need more tank space as they grow.

Dime body size is about the smallest size shops will take them, fish this size need about 1/2 gallon each to grow properly. Nickel body size need a gallon each, so start counting fry as they grow & plan ahead.

Domestic angels are generally terrible parents. All the line & inbreeding done to get the different color & fin types bred out the parenting instinct. Most people who breed angels pull the spawns for this reason.

But surely taking the spawn would make them worse parents? As they don't have the opportunity to practice? It takes most Cichlids a few goes to get a good spawn...

Or am i talking out of my bee-hind?

Pulling the spawn doesn't make them any better or worse parents. Angels spawn on the average every 7-14 days, with a small spawn being 200 eggs, larger ones are 600 or more. Nobody I know pulls every spawn, you would quickly be overrun with angels. The spawns you don't pull end up staying with the parents.

In many years of breeding angels, with many pairs, I've had a couple pairs get them as far as wigglers, then they get eaten. Other breeders I know get parent raisers on rare occasions, this is something to brag about. Domestically bred angels are far removed from their wild origins, this is not the case with many other cichlids. While needing practice holds true with other cichlids, it apparently takes a bit more than practice for domestic angels.
