Moving With My Oscars.? Tips Advice.

My husband is going to be transfered back too Texas. The trip will take around eight hours. My question is how do I transport my guys with the least amount of stress. Norris is around 7in. and Paunch around 6in. I also have three african cichlids and a pleco. I have found advice for short trips, but this will be a long haul and it has me worried sick. Any advice would be fantastic.

Ive always been told that Polystyrene boxes are the best thing to use as insulation, so a couple of those, best to get a cardboard box for those to sit in as some extra protection. Im almost positive you can get boxes specially for transporting fish (probably a must for the plec because they have so much spines, even when they are young these can burst bags) that you can seal up with pure oxygen so they wont be gasping by the time you get there. I think that providing you stuff the boxes full of insulation, news paper, polystyrene nibs etc. They don't like being cold but they would survive 8 hours easy.

This is some advice that I've followed previously for a 4 hour drive. Hope this helps at least a little

Or if your on a budget you could try using polystyrene boxes. But they would need to be thick, and I mean thick, Like at least 3 inches.

Thanks that was what had me worried. My pleco is around 6in. and he/she is a bushy nosed pleco. As it is they have to be caught by hand and not netted. I may just have too hit up my local pet store for bags and such.

Always use plastic bags from you LFS, anything else might have toxins in them. This does sound difficult, there might be cheaper alternatives to boxes you can have but that was just the first link I found. Bearing In mind that the bigger the box the more oxygen it can hold = The longer the fish will feel comfortable-ish.

I see myself now sitting in the back of my jeep with my guys..it's going to be a long trip. Great link btw I would be worried about using other plastics with all the chemicals and what not.

Honestly I think they'll be fine when fish are delivered to your door they're in the bag for 8+ hours sometimes. try and keep any light from getting through to them too and maybe use some stress zyme to coat the bags in too, it'll keep them calm for at least a couple hours.

Just curious have you ever heard of the eco bio-stone? It's a volcanic rock mix with helpful bacteria. Should I keep it in the water with my guys on the move?

ask your local shop for some of the boxes theyget their deliveries in. they probably dont use them again, or even if you have to pay a small amount for them. they get fish delivered from all over the world.
