Goldfish care

  • They need lots of light (leave the tank light on at least 8 hours a day)
  • Only feed them once a day/every 2 days
  • Make sure stones in the tank aren’t too small – they can get stuck in the fish’s throat
  • Change 35-40% of the water every week – they create a lot of waste and use a lot of oxygen. Allow the water you’re changing to stand overnight to release toxins (lead, chlorine)
  • As well as flakes and pellets, goldfish also like cooked peas, spinach, earthworms, cucumber, oranges and grapes
this is from an ALDI advert, its more comprehensive than the info given by most LFS. only things it misses are cycling, oh and the fact the tank is too smell for common goldfish. if a box shifter like ALDI can do it, why cant, most of, the places we buy fish do it?

what is an ALDI add?

interesting information

What makes them think that goldfish need the tank lights on for 8 hours a day? True they wouldnt like it if you kept them in a cellar with no lights but for a fish only tank the ambient lighting from a window or room lights is all that fish actually need.

I wonder how they think lead gets out of the water by leaving it over night, chlorine gasses off but heavy metals need to be bound up by a water conditioner.

far from ideal i know. but better than the "it'll be ok" comment, whatever size tank you tell the person at the LFS you have. the tankis no better really, its 15L and the pic shows a little girl feeding three gold fish!

someone should rewrite the sign so it reads a little more accurately.

What the sign is basically saying is:

Give the fish some light so you can see it.
Don't feed too much because it will rot down and we are not supplying a filter and a goldfish will be outputting a huge amount of ammonia already.
Don't use small gravel or sand because the fish may actually prefer it whereas with larger gravel there is a minimal chance the fish will choke and not outgrow the tank.
Change a huge amunt of water weekly because the tank is too small for the fish and we are not supplying a filter, therefore this is its only chance of survival.
Allow the water to stand because we don't know what dechlor is
Ignore the feeding one and throw in whatever you like.

Overall the guide si not very good at all. It misleads more than guides especially on the lead comment which could land them in trouble!!

We have a Aldi in Poeria, Illinois( in the USA) and they are a very "cvheap" store. I like them becasue they carry name brands for less! The do sell things like fish tanks and stuiff, but i have to say, that is better info than petsmart and petco give out! And, it's not even a pet store!

???? it says what i wanted it to say. not sure on the confusion. oops got it now.

Do I need a light?
A light isn't strictly necessary for goldfish, other than for aesthetic reasons. In a tropical aquarium a light is needed to provide plenty of light to help the plants grow, but goldfish tend to eat most plants.

That said, an aquarium without a light will look pretty dull and boring, so you'll probably want to add one anyway. This should only be left on for about eight hours each day, otherwise you'll find that the glass quickly gets covered in algae.

ok so the statment "need lots of light" is incorrect, but PFK agree with the time. i dont really see why they should get into trouble. its still way better than the advice most LFS offer!
