More Bulbs Equals More Watts?

This is probably a stupid question but if I wan't 80 watts for my planted tank, would two 40 watt bulbs = 80 watts?

Only if they are lighting the same area of tank.  For example a long tank lit by two 40W bulbs placed end to end would only be giving the tank 40W overall.

the tubes would be almost the same length as the tank, and be side by side. Would this be 80 watts?
