Mexican Dwarf Orange Crayfish

LOL. It's not porn! Here's Wikipedia's take on it...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cajun_cuisine (scroll 1/2 way down to crawfish boils)
Attendees are encouraged to "suck the head" of a crawfish by separating the abdomen of the crustacean and sucking out the abdominal fat/juices. The practice is known by the common phrase is "Pinch the tail, suck the head."

Here's a Google search for "pinch the tail" "suck the head". Almost all of the first 50 hits were about crawfish boils. For some reason an NPR blog made it and I couldn't find what on there had to do with crawfish boils but then... that's NPR (National Public Radio), which in America is the bastion of far-left liberalism that we poor taxpayers are extorted to pay for.

Ya'll just need to learn how to cook the lil buggers and then you'll have people gobbling them down so they won't be a problem anymore.

Funny you should say that, actually... I remember a few months ago there was a government announcement that the best thing people could do for their local rivers was to go crab fishing. Mitten crabs are a delicacy in china.

Not sure about those crayfish though. I grew up near the coast. Lobsters grow much bigger and juicier... ;)

But it's the "whole" crawfish boil party experience that makes them so good.

Lobsters are normally eaten by people with arthritic pinky's (sticking out all the time while they eat... LOL) where crawfish boils are for us normal folk who like to drink beer (or your favorite non-alcoholic beverage) and hang out with friends in a backyard party setting. Plus, sucking the head of a lobster would not be an easy task for most folks.

Crawfish are boiled in HUGE 50G pots with lots of crab-boil and cajun spices so they are SPIIIICCCYYYYYY! We also throw in some Irish Potatos (small creamer type), corn on the cob, mushrooms, sweet vidalia onions and anything else in the kitchen. Then the entire mix is drained and dumped on a big table and people stand around the table and dig in.

Lobsters are normally boiled in a little salt water and eaten with a butter sauce... BOOORRRRIINNNNGGG!!! LOL

I think I'll have to bring a Crawfish Boil over to the UK. I know you guys/gals like to party since you all have as many pubs as we do down here in New Orleans. Many of our local neighborhood bars (pubs) have crawfish boils as part of their overall marketing strategy since they bring in so many people. The crawfish and fixins are cheap and the people drink lots more beer to wash down the spicy hot food so the bars make their money!!! :D I think they would go over HUGE in the UK.

And on a side note... once your spinless politicians see how much people like eating the crawfish, they'll lift the import bans since they won't have to worry about crawfish ruining the ecosystem since any that get out will be quickly caught for the next crawfish boil!!! :D

humm do we realise that you do not need a license to keep Redclaw in the uk? any other, none native cray, you need to apply to DFRA to keep. Redclaw are kept under a general license, just like dogs.

well fishing and trapping signals, is for the most part, difficult. many river bank, owners will not allow it. not because you will catch cray, but because if you fall, or fall in, they may be liable. oops excess litigation, another deadly import from over the pond!

if you can and do go fishing/trapping. please put back any big/mature cray. signals as they age are very cannibalistic, so removing them from a section of river, can cause the number of cray to increase, not decrease as you might expect.

lol and finally make sure you can tell the difference between signal cray and white claw, it would be a shame to reduce further, our native cray!

ps if you find any rivers that will let you trap/fish cray. drop me a pm. i would love to get a trapping map together for the UK!

come on guys, please dont argue, i didnt know they are illegal in this country, i should have checked before hand. i agree its a stupid law not allowing me to have one, but only as i want one, if i really thought about it, it would make sence, the chinese mittet crab has had a large inpact on the UK, and i would hate for any other animal to do the same, end of the day, as much as i would like a cray, its the law that says im not allowed one, so really thats it, no argue.
sorry for bringing this up, please lets not start a huge debate and get this topic closed.

dont worry fishguy619, you have been responsible for starting a very interesting thread. hearing peoples opinions, and letting other air there's. one thing has already come out, imo, with one exception, people seem to agree. whatever they think of this law and it implications, it should be followed. i feel thinking like that, will allow us to make it possible for relaxation, perhaps in the future.

You could be onto a winner, especially with the whole 'suck the head' marketing strategy. :)

We do eat crayfish over here, mostly in dainty salds. The fancy sandwich shops often sell crayfish & rocket (arugula) sandwiches too. I've seen crayfish gumbo & jambalay a few times too, although I've never tried it.

Beer, parties and food you can joke about with is a brilliant idea.

You, sir, have clearly never had cantonese-style chilli lobster, stir fried with lemongrass and ginger... :p

After all, who hasn't played about with crab claws before?

Now all ya'll have to do is have a big crawfish boil, invite the spineless politicians over and tell them if they would relax the import laws, you could have them more often and maybe even have fund-raisers for the politicians. I bet if they knew they could scalp some money off the crawfish, they'd make them legal in a second!!! :p

lol that would just be like a politician, change the laws coz they like the taste of a Cray! its got nothing to do with what they taste like or how we keep them, its the damage they do when idiots let them loose! and this hobby seems to have a lot of idiots! i know a few people who still flush their fish if they have problems with them!!!!! its been a problem on a number of occasions!

i desperately want to keep Cray, though i'm happy, with just Redclaw. but i would love the chance to keep others. talk of ignoring the law, however will not help!

There are 10 times more idiotic politicians for every idiotic pet owner (as a percentage). If it wasn't for people standing up to the idiocy of some laws and politicians, there would never have been a USA and the many other democracies all around the world. When politicians, dictators, kings or queens get out of control, it's time to throw the bums out of office. Too bad we can't go back to the old days where we would just behead them in the public square. There's quite a few commie-lib politicians over here that I wouldn't mind releasing the string of the guillotine blade. :D

lol very true, thing is they make us pay them to do it too!!!
thing is the law on Cray is not idiotic, not to control the people who own them would be! if people are not trusted enough to look after them safely, as we live in a "free"? country, the only option is to control the access they have to them.

as for chopping the head off of the head of state, well we in the UK only did it once, and it lead to disaster, well sort of, and it was restored after a few years. though from my perspective, perhaps the people of the US could do the world a favour and try it now! lol not sure GW would notice it had gone though. :hyper:

lol Commie-Lib. if you read the first paragraph of the declaration of independence, there can be no better, description of just that. equality is something that goes against everything, the capitalist/right believe. lol but that is for another thread.

Careful, Hillary will lock you up when she wins in 2008.

lol cant be good to be a Republican ATM, bad war, bad economy and the knowledge that their time is up! lol we have a duff PM here, but he aint flushed our economy down the drain.

Well... not much, anyway.

lol you must be young. we have one of the most stable economy's, in the world. a far cry from the boom, but only for some, and bust, that the Thatcher beast thought was so good.
