The mailman literally just delivered this handsome betta man into my hot little hands. I can't wait to get him home today. This is the picture the seller provided for me. What a looker, eh?

I'm just a bit miffed..... you saw the picture of the fish I believed I was getting..... once I got him home and settled in his tank.... this is the fish that I got.

I'm going to keep him, because I fell in love with him and because I promised him a home and because I didn't buy him because of the quality of his fins, but still...... that couldn't have happened in 2 days transit.

Is it fin rot? Or, is it just tearing? And what, if anything, can I do help him recover?

It could easily have happened in 2 days of shiping, if he's a tail biter (due to the stress) or it may be some finrot.

Either way it's not the end of the world, super clean water and some TLC will soon have his fins back in top notch. Hard to tell from the pics due to his colouring, but if the edges are reddish at all it may be an infection.

You'll need to make the call on whether to medicate for finrot.

He's still a handsome fish  Just a little under the weather.

I'm shocked that it could've happened while he traveled. Poor little guy. I'll absolutely give him TLC....

Apparently, my animal rescue personality carries over to fish, too. I just recently got 3 betta that some guy was getting rid of just because they were old..... but to me, they're still beautiful.

It's not unheard of for bettas to chew off some tail while in transit. If it's not red or black around the edge, and doesn't progress, then it's not an infection. But even if it's not an infection now, it could turn into one. I'd add some antibacterial meds just to be on the safe side. I bet he colors up more once he's completely settled in, too.

I just noticed that Benny Blue, the male that I bought a week ago, who I knew was going to arrive all tattered, looks so much better since being in a treated tank. I'll do the same for Oliver and keep my fingers crossed..... thanks everybody! :thanks:

And yeah, I sure do love him anyway..... :shifty:

Yes, I may be overly cautious, but I medicate if I see any chance of fin damage. I know I am taking a chance. but I have had bad experience with fin rot that took hold.

HubaHuba showed up with something and some fin loss after I brought him home. So I used Maracyn Plus. It is an everyother day for three days treatment. The loss stopped right away. I just remembered he was a PetSmart boy.

The poor guy has been in a small amount of water for a few days and with fin damage. How old is he? Has he been bred?

Sometimes breeding stock Betta are sold after their best days are past. They are gorgeous fish sold cheaper. They could also have fin damage from that. Of course I am going way out there in foggy factless imagining land.

Regardless, he is going to be a beauty when he gets gussied up.

This was a fish that originally came from Thailand. He was bought by a friend of someone I know from another forum. She then purchased him from her friend and used him for breeding (I think). When she realized she was not going to breed him any longer, she was interested in getting other fish and wanted to move him along. I basically just provide happy homes for bettas, so I took him from her. So, I'm not sure how old he is but I'd imagine he's at least 2 years old. And I don't care. Young, old, it's all the same to me.

I shot off a note to the seller, but haven't heard back from her yet. All I want to know is whether he incurred all of this damage during shipping. Then, I'll know I'm dealing with a stress related thing.

I have high hopes that I can make him comfortable and help him regain his vitality. Whether he'll regain his finnage remains to be seen, but with love, we can conquer all.

Most of my fish that I have rescued from lfs have ended up with intense colours and personalities they just need some loving

And I just adore the fish in your avatar.... what a beautiful boy.....

My husband always comments on how gorgeous my fish are and how their colors seem so vibrant... I guess that happens when you're a happy and healthy fish. :good:

Edited to add: I just got a note from the seller, that Oliver certainly did not look like this when she shipped him. So, it did happen in transit and now I know exactly what I'm treating him for. Yay!

its gonna be good when hes back to his full glory :)
