Ok I have a Fluval filter that has the fine mesh(?) pad things attached to the carbon pads, anyway i took these out when i had to run some meds and never got round to replacing them. This has left some space in the filter compartments where the sponges are kept.

Do you think it would be worth buying some more of the sponge filter pads and filling the space up with them?

Oh yes! Empty space in a filter is a waste

I thought as much but i'd rather hear it from someone who knows what they are doing.

I know it won't matter not having the carbon in there but what about the fact there is no fine floss?

Fine floss just filters out fine particles. It is not necessary.

Brilliant thanks.

One last question thing, what is the best way to put the new sponges in? Is it better to put them on top or underneath the existing ones? And is there any point in cleaning the existing sponges in old tank water and then rinsing the new sponges in that before putting them in the filter?

If the sponges are the same and could be put in either position and the two positions are before and after each other in the water flow path, then put the mature sponge in the flow path just prior to the new sponge. That will ease the migration of the few autotrophic bacterial explorers who will leave their home colony to go populate your new sponge.

Yeah that's what happens so i shall do it that way then thanks...

Love the idea of bacterial explorers just got an image of one with in hiking gear with a map and compass looking for the new land of Sponge  (and yes i am unhinged lol)

Maybe that is a Google map or a mapquest map FinalFantay. These are modern bacteria we are dealing with.

Yes, I've recently read a paper that helped explain that one of the slow-downs we can experience in fishless cycling is due to the little fellows having trouble with the long shoelaces on their hiking boots. WD

They should use velcro straps, much quicker than laces. Also they should invest in some good sat nav and GPS systems

Cheers SD, will have a look see what I can find
