I have used egg crate with argos sand on top along with the ocean rock.

100cm l x 40cm w x 55cm h, 200 litres

that looks like quite a deep bed. Good for mbuna that dig pits :good:

I've Had to have the bed that deep to hide the crate, finding the filter is moving the sand around alot though and my friend is now worried me by saying thats alot of weight in rocks for the glass to hold??

It's not, don't worry about it. You've done everything right with the egg crate.

Mine has no problems:

You have a sweet tank dude, I too use Argos play sand. Can't beat it for price. What plants are you using out of interest?

All ocean rock matey.
keep salavating over your youtube video thats how my tank is going to look (the one I've got in my head)
As a point of interest what weight of rock have you got in there and have you taken any reinforcement etc in stand ?

Cheers.

Stand is reinforced with cinder blocks but I don't think it needs it to be honest. These cabinets can take a hell of a lot of weight as the force pushed them straight down.

It's 100KG of ocean rock - priced at £20 per 25KG.

How do you keep it all from falling? I have about 200 lbs of river stone and its half that height.

I'd go with either mbuna or peacocks. Ideally you should have a 4ft tank minumum, but since you're is a little deeper you could probably get away with some of the less aggressive species. If mbuna I'd aim for a total of 12-15 adults, look for labidochromis caeruleus, pseudotropheus socoloci, iodotropheus sprengerae. You might be able to get away with 1m/3-4f Cynotilapia afra, males can be pretty aggressive but since they stay smaller and you have plenty of rockwork they'd probably work out.

If you go with peacocks, I'd say no more than 8-10 adults, you could either go with 1m/3f of 3 different species or go with an all male tank, if you do that be sure to only get 1 of each species. :good:

Yeah dude, think I'd go with Mbuna. 100cm is probably just 1ft too short for 'most' Haps.

If you pick your Mbuna very carefully though, you could have some peacocks in there too.

Least aggressive would be, as dthoffsett already mentioned:

Yellow Labs (labidochromis caeruleus) - the most common but the best in my opinion for a multitude of reasons.
Rustys (iodotropheus sprengerae) - these are indeed 'brown' but my males are turning 'velvet purple' now and look great.
Acei (Pseudotropheus Acei) - these can be good shoalers which is unusual.

...then Afra would probably be ok too. I've had no problems with my Afra. But every fish is different so it's up to you.

You could add a bit of 'red' into that tank then with a Peacock such as: Red Rubin, Firefish, Dragon's Blood, OB Peacock.

Cheers.

Yeah, you get a lot of rock for the weight I feel. Most pieces are very holey so it lightens the load. The rock is rough with nooks and crannies meaning it locks together extremely well. Basically, it acts as one big rock in the end it is that 'tight' together. Very secure.

Cheers for the reply fella  the plants are anubis, java fern and the 2 front ones are plastic but look pretty real.

Thanks for the help m8, i'll look into the names you've suggested there :good:

Hey folks,

still fishless cycling this tank, i used some media from another established tank along with some gravel in tights (not mine  ) being adding pure ammonia 4-5ppm when it gets down every 24 hrs but ammonia is zero every 12 hrs.
Nitrite is still high and not seeing much of a drop yet within 12 hrs and I also have nitrate about 60ppm, my worry is that i'm away now for 2 days so will my cycle go out of sync?
