I'm looking to probably stock some Rams at some point and read that these fish along with plenty of other types require a mature tank.

So my question is......................................

When is a tank classed as mature?

Depends on how deep into the question you want to IMO. A mature tank to add livestock too is 4-6months(for example neon like a mature tank i would not add them for a least 4 months after a cycle for me )

For a tank to be fully mature i would say maybe 2 years to find a balance and the eco system to start IMO

I say it depends on how sensitive the fish are. People say Cardinals are best in a mature tank but with them they only mean about 2 months. Other fish it may be a year plus...

I guess you would have to ask someone who knows the species really well

When i was asking about my stocking last year i was frequently advised that anything over 6 months COULD be classed as mature.
How is the ich treatment going big man?

Terry.

There doesn't seem to be any more at the moment and the fishies are behaving normally as far as I can see. So fingers crossed!

On another subject my display card has died in my PC today

(currently using my wife's netbook) so gutted as I'm going to have to fork out around £100 for a new one which could have been spent of fishy stuff!!!!

Depending on fish and setup I would generally speaking class mature as at least six months, not including the cycling period, when there's a nice biofilm over surfaces etc.

It is a question that has been asked before -- might be worth using the search function and reading through some of the older threads. I still personally would define a mature tank as one that has growth a healthy biofilm on every surface in the tank. That biofilm is filled with a wealth of microorganisms, and a healthy diverse biofilm helps act as a safety net & buffer is things should happen to go wrong. But, lots of different ways to define it, again, may be worth browsing some of the old threads.

Goodness, I'd better be careful about not keeping *too* clean a tank then...I do a lot of scrubbing lol...
