Make Your Own?

I have been bored on eBay - which is always bad news - and i have seen several 'custom aquariums' which are HUGE. So i was wondering, how difficult is it to make your own aquarium? Is there anything more to it than getting sheets of thick glass and properly sealing them together to make a water tight container?

I figure you could save a fair bit of money if you have the handyskills and tools....or am i wrong?

Its a lot harder than that and the prospect of it would terrify me I just wouldnt sleep with a home made tank in my house......

yeah me neither. apparently its not too difficult as long as you have the know how but as wills said i couldnt get much rest just knowing i built it...... :crazy:

Well, i am a Structural Engineer, so i guess it shouldn't bother me....but my actual building skills (rather than designing skills) are a bit lower than would be necessary. HOWEVER, my father is an extremely skilled guy who is currently building a whole house! lol. So i figure i can rope him in to help if it is deemed as possible and financially beneficial to do so. I would love a huge tank that is around the 300L range, but the cost is huge!

Saying that one of the easiest ways to build a home made tank is the plywood tanks with a glass screen at the front - a member called Vikkiandkev have just done a huge 8ftx4ft one and I have seen a few people building them on other forums and they dont see that bad its just a plywood case with a rubber paint lining and then the front screen is siliconed to the viewing area. So I mean if between the two of you you feel confident about it its worth a try but just imagine 300 liters of water all over your house it would be an absolute nightmare..... Its one of my biggest fears to be honest.
