A member close to the lfs could pick out the fish for you, according to your requirements?

I got the idea while reading through a thread on a predominately American Board. One guy wanted some discus fish, one of the more unique and expensive breeds, and could only find it at another lfs which was in another state. A state where another member lived and to cut a long story short the member who frequented the out of state lfs picked the discus according to the specific requirements of his fellow board member. The store then shipped the discus via mail order.

Wouldn't that be cool if we could do that for each other here? And perhaps in return we could post some plants or fish food or something fish related that the person who picked out the fish for us might need.

What do you guys think?

I've always been afraid to buy fish online or otherwise, as there's no real telling what sort of condition they'll be in once they get there

A big problem with such an idea is that it'd take a lot of commitment, and shipping livestock isn't as easy as putting them in an envelope and sticking them an a mailbox. They need to be at the person's door, with the person there, within about 24 hours. You need to make sure the temperature of the water with the fish stays within their preference, and the ammonia and such within the bag is at minimum. A whole lot of #106### that I wouldn't be able to trust myself in handling.

My apologies perhaps I wasn't clear. In fact perhaps the above was a little bit of a ramble lol.

But with that said, be perfectly clear (or at least try to be ) the store in question were already doing mail orders as part of their business/service. The forum member simply picked the fish according to what his fellow forum member was looking for ascetically. The lfs then shipped as they would normally.

Great idea.

This company do fish by mail order. They have a huge turnover of fish and the staff are very knowledgable. There are certain guarantees regarding fish my mail order.

See: Trimar Aquatics

I have taken a look at their site and have heard good things about them. If anyone is near Trimar or Tyne valley aquatics perhaps. I would love to hear from you!

I bought five Botia Striata (Zebra loach/Candystripe loach) from them on Wednesday. In truth, I live about 40 miles from them so went and collected them myself, but it was the first time I'd been there and their tanks are many, varied and clean, and they have plenty of staff. I can't vouch for their postal fish service but everything else seems top notch.

Oh --and see another post --, the small-snail problem I bought the Zebra loaches for has now gone, they demolished the snail population in less than a day!!!

I don't see why you'd require someone to go into the shop to select for you when surely you could just tell the seller if you're looking for something specific and cut out the middleman?

Was planning a trip to tyne valley tomorrow but fish I want are out of stock and not expected in till Tuesday so will probably pop down on Wed or thursday. I find it a good shop (if a bit more expensive than others in region - but it is a bit further out in the sticks), staff helpful, tanks v. clean etc. Friends around the country who have recieved fish in post have been pleased with them.
