This morning I discovered my DG had died after about a week of treatment for parasites.

I've decided to take this as an opportunity to start a tank of right (he was the only occupant), though I have 2 questions on how to move on.
Number 1, how to clean the tank out. I don't know exactly what kind of parasite it was, so playing it safe, how should I make sure to rid every last trace of it? Would ammonia work provided I run for a day or two before restocking?
Which brings me to Number 2, what is the best way to keep from breaking the cycle, the best I can come up with is "cycling" a bucket. Also, how should I go about making sure the filter doesn't have anything nasty hiding in it?
There's also the question of what to do with the melon sword in there until I get the everything sorted out, I'm assuming it would be okay to put it in the bucket with the filter until everything's sorted out, am I thinking correctly?
Plans for the tank are to rescue a Betta from one of the LFS, and add plenty of soft, betta-friendly ornaments and plants.

If you mean to sanatize the tank you will have to break it down completely and clean it out with bleach then let it dry and refill with lots of dechlor. A few days of ammonia is not going to kill much.

[Punches self in fase] You're probly right, after some researche, his symptoms match up with it, and that would explain why I lost him. I did find a few threads in the emergencies section with the same symptoms (little red bumps on his mouth) that pointed to a parasite, but I should have looked more into it. Now I'm really kicking myself.

I should have been a bit bit more specific on my first question, I'm well aware that it needs to be taken down, I meant would ammonia work as a sanitizing agent once it is broken down.
