Hello peeps
We are thinking of the idea of stingrays and have read the informative pinned article at the top of the section. We are looking at a 5ftx2ftx(?)height tank and possibly a teacup stingray. Having looked around stingrays seem more readily available than we first thought though the motoros seem more readily available. What would you recommend to a first time sting ray owner? We would prefer one of the smaller species that are preferably more easily sourced.

We realise the tank needs to be well filtrated, open spaced, best substrate to be sand to bury in and generally lack of decorations. Have we missed anything basic for the tank? We are sourcing said tank at the moment to get up and running, then to source the stingray itself. From what I have been reading we could possibly have two, though males will kill each other?

I've limited experience having striggled with a Retic ray. my tanks 60x30x24 and I think the minimum recomended is 30 inches wide due to the size the rays get

some of the more experienced keepers of rays like T1Karman and Dave Oddballs will be along I;m sure but you may not have a big enough tank :good:

Hi Amy, wow rays eh! i think 6x2x2 is minimum size tank required for rays even teacups as they are just juvi rays. as simonas said dave oddballs keeps them so im sure he will help you out :good:

Matt.

Was about to ask a similar question actually so Ill follow this intently :) :good:

You could use a 5x2x2 as a grow out for the smaller ones, eventually i'd see if you can get 72" x30 " to add the extra width.
Unfortuantly as most of us find out theyre a pain to source , the only ones that are readily available is motoro and retic';
Motoro's get big! i've got a 4-5 inch one atm and expect it to outgrow my new 72x30x30 within a couple of years.
Retic's are cheap and hard to keep alive, if you can get them feeding you're good :) these'll be fine a 5x2 for a wile i would of thought.

You want to keep an eye out for Hystix and Scobina rays these are hardier , accept foods better and stay small. However don't expect these to be cheap if you do find them.

Retic;s you can get for £40-70ish motoro's anywhere from £100+ normally over £150

Scobina and Hystix i'm not sure as i'm yet to see any but i'd expect to pay minimum 200-300£ each for juvi's

Thanks a lot guys :good: We are toying with the idea at the moment. Typical the perfect tank we found so far they wont deliver and he wants it gone the day of selling :rolleyes: We found a 354litre for £225 locally but it wouldnt be ideal for rays..its just trying to figure out something interesting otherwise.. There is a guy at the LFS that has a perfect tank for £70 but unsure whether this had a stand. Looking at a bigger tank (of course I want more puffers but it is more my thing :)) We have always loved the rays it really is going to depend on sourcing them and the tank..

If you can travel you can get some cracking tanks, there was a fibre glass tank on AC not long ago for £300 i think and that was 6x3x3

yes i enqiured about that 6/3/3 in london, was going to go for it and it had gone,grrrr..hehe

as to tanks,if you find something and need a driver gimme a shout, cars not big but if you go big big renting a vans cheap n i can drive

Retic's , histix (think that's how you spell it) and scobina all stay around the same size at 12-14 inch afaik . The motoro's are still small if you compare it with some of the large rays which get 4ft and larger.
