On the protein question — I've seen the same with platies and high-fin variatus. Heavy protein is great for growing juveniles but past sexual maturity it becomes the #1 cause of swim bladder issues, especially in fancier strains. Switching to about 60–70% plant matter (blanched spinach, zucchini, peas) once they reach breeding age usually clears it up within a couple of weeks.
