It's almost got to be the Molly's...

a highly varied diet, plus algae cookies most feedings...
every other feeding is different, but with as much algae base as possible, and a lot of milled bug bites...

Since you liked my post, I would like to clarify: red mosquito larvae are considered harmful to livebearers, dwarf cichlids and some other species.

I don't think we have red around here, I think ours are considered black mosquito larvae... the state of Minnesota has "10,000" lakes, plus's many rivers and other waterways and marshes, so mosquito's are considered the state bird around here...

as fate would have it, this last group of mollys, bought as green sail fin pairs, from Dan’s have turned out to be the best starting group… been here 4 days, and are all still alive… all are between 3 and 4 inches in length, and the coloring pattern I was looking for… both females are quite robust…

I did read these are challenging to keep, as they need to be fed several times a day, yet the water needs to be pristine, so while they need to be fed often, they are very sensitive to over feeding…

assuming at that point, we’re talking about nitrates, and my well water is high in nitrates from the tap, so to help that, since the water is rock hard, I’m going to get set up to blend some RO, which should still leave plenty of minerals, but dilute the amount of nitrates in the water change water…

also my hoyas are rooting nicely, and begin to reduce the nitrate at the tank…

Softening water for mollies doesn’t seem right. Have you got a gh tester/ reading yet? They need a high gh 250+.

@Naughts … at this point, I would be diluting the nitrates in my straight well water, and as mentioned above my water is hard enough, that the mollys should be ok with that…

this was from my last testing a few weeks ago, that I posted in a different thread…

What is the 726ppm a reading of?

I still don’t know your GH - that is the most important reading, both here and in general. It measures the hard minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium in your water.

The KH is the buffering capacity, anything above 4 is fine because it will prevent sudden dangerous drops in pH.

The tds (total dissolved solids) is just that, it may relate to GH but equally may just reflect a tank full of dechlorinator, fertiliser, plant waste, fish waste and so on.

I've kept them as well but I do have to admit that I haven't fed them more than just once a day. And they've thrived and reproduced perfectly, tbh. And our water is already hard without me doing anything to adjust the water parameters.

no dechlorinator, or fertilisers ever… if you include medications, those only as needed, but diluted at most, from that last reading…

lost one of my nice looking female sailfins, while the non Rio Atoyac swords appear to be thriving
😖
